Books that have helped you on your path...
    #1440584 - 04/08/03 07:50 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

What are some books that have helped you on your path in life. Spiritualy, intellectually, shared happiness, wisdom, insight? And...if you could, explain a bit about the book and why.

I'll start, in no specific order...

- Way of the Peacful Warrior, by Dan Millman - great book about a person who meets a mysterious man, and eventually takes a student/master position under him in which the old man teaches him about meditation, higher purpose on life, and seeing things clearly. VERY smooth and good read.

- Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman - Sequal to the book, goes real indepth, a bit lacking at times but real good. Involves an old lady as a teacher instead of the man.

- Meditation for Dummies - Good introduction to meditation, and deals with all forms of it. Fairly in depth for an introductiion, with 100s of guided meditations and about 10 basic mediations. Discusses the background, history, benefits, science of it, etc.

- Philopshy for Dummies. Good introduction to philosophy.

- Handy-Space Answer book - Good introduction to astronomy, has a LOT of information in a well written manner.

- The Healer Within by Roger Jahnke - A great self-healing book that involves many techniques from Deep breathing, to subtle exercises, to meditation and reflexology. I still practice some methods I learned from it.

Journey of Awakening by Ram Dass - A good book that get a bit more into meditation then Meditation for DUmmies. Gets pretty specific and can help you a lot if you are curiios or into meditation.

- Children of the Matrix, by David Icke - A huge conspiracy book, and although probably not true, its still a great read. Has many sources, good information, and I thought the book was well-written. Wether you believe it or not doesnt matter, just try and enjoy it.

- Flower of Life WOrkshop Volume 1, by Drunvalo M. - A GREAT read, kind of combines all aspects of metaphysics, new age, religion etc into a startling and amazing revelation type book. He claims to be an ascended master helping us in our time.

- DMT: Spirit Molecule - Pretty good book with insight into the DMT drug, and some information on psychedelics in general. Not as well written as I expected though, and gets boring at times.

Those are just a few books IVe read that I felt helped me the MOST in my journey.

Anyone care to share theirs?

Im interesting in reading right now.....

What the Budda Taught
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
Be Here Now by Ram Dass
Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu (havent finished it)

any insight into those books or recommendations?

A yaqui way of knowledge-Carlos Castaneda
A seperate reality-Carlos Castaneda
Journey to Ixland-Carlos Castaneda
Tales of power-Carlos Castaneda
All of these books deal with Yaqui sorcery in central america. They deal a lot with
peyote mushrooms and as I read them in Junior high, I gained profound insight into the world. Nothing I say hear can do them justice.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance-Robert Pirsig

Mans search for meaning-Victor Frankl
A very psycology rooted book written by a WWII concentration camp survivor

I read the Castaneda books- they were entertaining. Smoking some strange mixture and ingesting peyote... My biggest problem (though it was all in good fun) was that the reader can become exasperated with Carlos at times, for he made himself out to be slow at catching on.
As for Supermarket's query, I recommend reading

Post Office by Charles Bukowski. You'll love your life afterwards.
Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins, and any of his books. It is about a King destined to die... but he escapes death and spends a thousand years being bright and loving life and thinking insightful thoughts. Includes the Great God Pan as a character...
A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole- By no means a spiritual book, and surely not a pick me up... But read it nonetheless! Thoroughly enjoyable (and that is what it is all about...).

Motorcycle Maintenance was a great book, merging classical and romantic thinking...
And I'll be sure to check out some of those books you cited, thanks!

Celestine prophecy
Siddhartha
Stranger in a Strange Land
No Ordinary Moments
Incarnations of Imortality series

I think almost any book has something to offer the reader on some level.

Authors of books just try to impose what they think is right to the reader- it's just propaganda if you think about it. It doesn't mean it's true. Books are a waste of time unless there are just pitcures or unbiased facts.

Every new-age book I have started to read was complete fiction to me. After that, I didn't even try anymore, and I think I'm better for it.

They all have a different point of view true. But that is part of what you can learn from it. Doesn't mean you have to buy into their ideas.

I suppose the only real "New Age" book I've read is Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. And I thoroughly enjoyed it in a thinking kind of way...
A novel is a very loose art form; anything can happen inbetween two covers. If they are meant for purposes of propaganda, somehow they seem impure to me. However, every book has something to offer, and more often than not if one is reading a book and comprehending it, he or she is intelligent enough to see past the bullshit and develope an intelligent decision about what to feel.

Thinking is better than reading imo.

But reading is better than watching TV.

See, I think reading is GREAT. It is a tool in itself, just like meditation, mushrooms, etc.

By reading, you view someone else's perspective. You understand how others view life. This doesnt mean you accept it, instead you just take the information in , then let it go.

Reading to me is a joyful experience. Sometimes I concentrate so much that I forget Im reading, and Im completely visualing it in my head. Only if the author is good!

I admit, a lot of books are made for money, and propaganda, but books themselves cant harm or dislodge you, only your own mind can after reading one!!!

Maybe youve just read some bokos that didnt appeal to you - give some of the ones on this list a try

But reading is an excellent method of acquiring knowledge.

Only if they are based on facts and not illusions.

I start reading and the author goes on and on and on about nothing, or little of something, but they write as if I was a stupid child. I might be a little different than most cuz I gots an overactive imagination that makes almost any fantasy or sci-fi novel look like a pile of shit. Everything else seems so boring to me. I wish books were shorter, so that they actually get to the point sometime this century (and so I don't get boared enough to put it down).

True, many sci fi and fantasy novels are shit.
I suppose that I've devoted myself to a literary world (it's a tedious path... I still may give it up; I'm only a kid, I still may), whereas it seems apparent that you are devoted to art and music. I was an art major for a while at school... but I realized that I had a propensity for putting out pieces of paper, or writing essays. I've always played the drums, and that is what I really want to do. But don't knock all authors before you try 'em. Then again, I suppose you haven't, just the one's you've read. Being an artist, I suppose it is hard to be confined to the path that another is writing out. I agree, to an extent. "Screw reading this. I'm gonna go make something." And there is nothing more satisfying. I just love to read, is all, and for some reason I find myself constantly trying to "turn people on" to books. Try reading Bukowski. He's not trying to sell anything, or push any beliefs. He's just writing about getting drunk and trying to pay the rent. And he is always entertaining, because he is such a beast of a man; a drunken, womanizing, despizable beast, but loveable all the same...
