I've read many articles regarding the use of Perlite as a means of gaining optimum humidity for your grow chamber. I was curious so I have just begun my first trial run with this tech. I'm only using a small, 10 gal. aquarium as a test run. My question is: How long should it take for the chamber to get to the desired >95% humidity? It's been a day, and it is steady at 80%, but doesn't seem to increase. I soaked and drained the bag directly after opening so as not to inhale any dust, then put about 2 in. of perlite in the chamber. I proceded to add about 1/4 in. of water... Any help would be appreciated.

put a little more perlite and water in there
also is your hygrometer calibrated correctly?

What type of hygrometer do you have? A friend of mine bought an analog one (cheapy from a hardware store) and it broke (and froze solid) at about 80% humidity. Is there condensation on the walls of the terrarium?

It's called Zoo Med. Not too cheap; its made for reptile terrariums. There is condensation on all sides of the aquarium however. Help????

chill your hygrometer is a peice.
your terrarium is at 95-100% in all likelyhood
at least thats what kramer says

Get one of these babies and perilite will become obsolete . Cousin IT has one hooked up to three 10 gal tanks and has no need for perilite , save lots of space .

20 $ , plus a pump . Cousin IT bought a pump that is for a30 - 80 gal tank , it has a variable adjustment . Hell , having hard time keeping humidity down during pin set , need to invest in tanks that have holes cut in bottom , this would remove need to fan to remove co2, and aid in lowering RH , or a timer (sorry for rambling about things needed to improove system ) . He is so happy he went to this little item . By the way you get them at PETSMART in the reptile area . Drill hole in top(lid for your tank ) to attach fitting for tubing , and away you go . Keep peroxidated , distilled water in it , and you'lll never have to clean it , unless you get nasties real bad .
