Popcorn contam with wet spot?
    #1429992 - 04/04/03 08:00 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

My Pet Rock's friend noticed on some quart jars that there seems to be a very moist area pretty much on the bottom and a small spot on the side bottom that is very wet and looks a little like wet spot as it the moisture looks little thick (never seen wet spot before) , though the rest of the jar is doing awesome in colonization. Moisture is settling on bottom of jar due to I think of the mycelium eating the popcorn and pushing the moisture out of the popcorn. Stuff looks little cloudy. All the jars have moisture on the bottom though only after they were well through there colonization , was no moisture after initial pressure cooking.
Sorry no pics at this time. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Only time will tell. Moisture built up after some colonization period is no good and often means bacterial contamination, keep an eye on those and toss it if they start to smell. Report any change.
Btw, a pic would be really good.

Ok here is the pics that my Pet rocks friend wanted me to post.

These are the two pics of the best jar that is going but with the most moisture at the bottom.

Another jar that has moisture build up.

The jar on left has great growth, where all other jars look like the jar on the right.
Any idea why, just the strain? or ? btw B+ is the strain, pressure cooked for at least a hour.

Pics 1 and 2, it's hard to tell if it's a contam or not. Personally i think it might be but only time will tell, if that uncolonized portion of the substrate is not done in less than a week than it is no good.
Pic 3 is bacterial contamination. Toss it.
Pic 4, the jar at right is also contaminated. Toss it.

Btw, compare the consitency of the moisture liquid between the jar on pic 1,2 and the jar on pic 3. If they are similar then jar of pics 1,2 is most probably contaminated also.
How did you prepare the popcorn, for how long did you soak it ? Did you cook the grain before PCing ?

They were boiled twice 2 days apart, then PC for over a hour, what would happen if they were cased , is there toxins known to be produced from wet spot?

I had the same problem...if you were to open them a crack and smell them i'm sure you'll find yourself almost pukeing from the smell. It looks as though maybe you need to drain longer after soaking ,before pc'ing. As for toxins being produced from wet spot...I wouldn't risk it...I know it sucks but just start over popcorns alot cheaper than a possible illness or permanant liver damage or some shit.Trust me after you smell them the last thing you'll want to do is eat anything that comes off it. :smirk:

If you want to try saving the jars from bacteria, use only mycelium and read hippies bleach tek. Bacteria could be very harmful and i personally don't try to save such jars, do it at your own risk.
Toxins are not directly bound to a wet spot. The presence of an anaerobic medium, which is what the wet spot creates, promotes the development of anaerobic bacteria.

SafeHaven:
I had that same ordeal with my rye jars. I took a whiff when they were 95% colonized (that moist spot refused to colonize) and it smelled shroomerific. Just pour out the water if it's less than 1/4''. This, in my case, was just too much water and the spot was too wet to colonize.

Good luck, and yes, like MAIA said, wetness = bacteria, so do what you like at your own risk. Remember, only time will tell.

Can someone send me the link for the bleach tek please? Searched and could not find it.
