Grain too Compact?
    #1424065 - 04/02/03 06:32 PM (21 years, 12 hours ago)

AFOAF has been colonizing on grains in pint jars for about 3 1/2 weeks now and they seem to be doing fairly well. However, the grain has appeared to become very compact and wet looking and he fears that it may not be airy enough for the mycellium to penetrate through. This mostly appears at the bottom portion of the jar and he tipped the jars upside down for a couple days but growth hasn't exactly accelerated since then. Is there anything he can do about this or does anybody have any advice for him?

Yeah, my friend has tried this and it sort of works. The problem is a lot of the time it compacts the grain even more! Hmmm...

What grains? Rye?

My advice is to next time use quart jars, and only fill about 1/2 no more than 3/4 full. Also you could add a pinch of gypsum per jar to promote grain looseness and easy shaking.

Under good incubating temps (82 / 84 F) & in total darkness pints of any grain should generaly be 100% colonized within 3.5 weeks.

Sounds to wet, if it compacts more when you give it a shake. So, something is outa whack.

it sounds like you might think about starting over.

Try the WBS tek. It almost never fails.
