Popcorn vs Wbs
    #1420137 - 03/31/03 06:21 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

I'm looking to try grains and I was wondering which one was a better one to start off with. I've read that their both fast some claiming popcorn alittle faster. Contams are a problem for both but I do have a pc so I'm not to worried about that. But what are the pro's and cons of each? Which one is faster? Which one fights off contams? Just looking for some opinions.

wild bird seed is cheaper, at least it is at home depot.

20 pound bag for $4

they are probably comprable in propensity to contam and quality
as a substrate.

if you are using it as spawn, I'd go with wbs any day.

the kernels are much smaller than popcorn which means you
get that many more innoculation points when you spawn.

more innoculations points in the bulk substrate means less
distance between points which means less time to colonization
which means less chance of contams.

I guess you could cook up twice as many popcorn jars...

I think the main selling point for popcorn is that it is a viable
alternative to rye or wbs for those folks who can't get it where
they are at.

Neither will fight off contams and since product varies from area to area you will see different opinions about each. You will just have to try both to figure it out.

Personally, I like both, but prefer popcorn because it's easy to obtain and work with. Popcorn also never clumps, so it is easy to shake, although I never shake anyways since the the "stuff" spreads like wild fire.

as for comparing and liking one more than the other:

Obtaining: both easy, but popcorn is on the way in the grocery store

Grain: WBS can much more easily be overcooked, while popcorn is sometimes difficult to get a little softer. How you want ur popcorn is a little questionable at this moment, but it seems myc. does well on both closed hard shells and split open soft ones.

Preperation: wbs is kinda messy with my shitty strainer

Procedures: there are set ratios for wbs, but none for popcorn. Both should be soaked for maximum water content anyway

shakability: popcorn clumps less, but if wbs is done right it should be a problem

speed: for me, popcorn has been faster, but also taken longer to germinate

Contamination: Popcorn's bigger hard kernals are a little harder to sterilize, but with proper procedures it is not a problem.

Moisture: for me wbs dried out faster, but it could have been due to alot of other things

spawn: Definately, wbs. It just creates more innoc points

casing: Both do great in casings

fruit size/yeild: Both do wonderfully

potency: I dont have sufficient experience on this

Hope that somewhat helps

Thanks for all the information so quick. I'm leaning towards popcorn, not that i have any real reason it just seems the better way for me. More opinions/facts are still welcome.

Sorry fugu...you're wrong. Corn rules. Also, don't worry bout "less inoc points" Corn is bigger and the whole surface gets covered with mycelium. That makes LOTS of mycelium to go around when you use corn for spawn. Also, corn holds a bit more water than rye, and it colonizes faster, due to the bigger air gaps around the kernels. When you get ready to use it as spawn, it breaks up really easily. None of that heavy beating against a car tire just to get it outta the jar.

Rabbit... you are right....the only real problem I ha noticed in the time I had used it a few years back was the cakes are more delicate....not an issue if you spawn it....but growing as a cake it does kinda suck.....

I ended up using popcorn, all my jars finished in 9 days max from a syringe. My casings have pinned but they look healthy.

He means tryptamine HydroChLoride. Hydrochloride is abbreviated as HCL. Fugu appears to have a touch of dyslexia as he consistently refers to it as HLC. He somewhat expounds on his aversion to popcorn in this thread:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum2&Number=1478442&Forum=All_Forums&Words=hydrochlor&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=1month&Main=1458674&Search=true#Post1478442

Unfortunately, he doesn't offer any evidence or references to support his conclusions. Oh well...

My pet prarie dog has done both, and likes the popcorn.Seems to colonize faster, probably because it shakes easier. Seems to be a little easier to get the moisture right,in his experience.
He can eat whats left over too.

PITDAWG ..............That was fucking awesome .....five year mission to explore strange new agar teks .........LOLLOLLOLOLOLOOL .

IMO is too soon to say which is best , popcorn seems to be relatively new , where the use of grain has been around long enough to say it has been tried and prooven to be quite effective .
But I cannot give you a fair evaluation since I have only used milo/millett mixes , and have not yet tried a Pop corn mixture .
PS i have no troubles with grain stayin clumped together , it shakes up just fine .
