Mango wilting
    #14140840 - 03/18/11 12:19 AM (13 years, 14 days ago)

So I've got a mango tree that's a couple years old, still in a pot as we get freezes here in the winter.  Three times now the leaves on the top most branch have wilted and died, while the rest of the plant seems healthy.  Each time I've cut i back once it becomes apparent that branch is done for in the hopes it would redirect it's energy to new growth.  However at this rate it's never gonna get over 4' tall.:mad2:
I'm trying to figure out what the problem is, it gets plenty of light and water, could it be root bound and need repotting? Or, does this look like a nutrient deficiency of some sort?  The leaves seem find they are just limp and beginning to turn orange at the base.

I think it needs repotting. A tree of that size should be in a pretty large container. I can't see the size of the one it's in from that picture.

I would try that and if it keeps dying back you could have a root problem like a disease in the soil or root rot.

if there are roots comimng out of the holes at the bottom of the pot and/or the plant comes out of the pot with all the soil easily with a little tug then it needs repotting.

or just replace soil  mango are LARGE* trees, but i have seen a few people grow them in sunrooms in canada, though have not seen fruit yet.

soggy soil can lead to root problems in potted plants.i always think replacing soil is better than liquid ferts.

It's in a 25 gal. pot, I'ma try replacing the soil since a larger pot would be a bitch to move.  If that doesn't work after a couple months I'll just put it in the ground and hope it survives.

You should built it a small greenhouse or something, mango are full tropical trees. Its possible that the relative humidity and things like that could be making it harm. When I go to cold placed I freeze my ass off, my skin feels ultra dry because of the relative humidity compared to the 60-80% humidity here.

About those mangos in canada, I am quite possitive that IF they flower and do not set fruit its because of lack of pollinators.  Honeybees do not visit mango trees. In fact it was a mistery for me who pollinated mango trees because I had never ever seen any insect in its flower. One day I woke veeery early, before the sun was even up, and since I couldnt sleep I sat below the mango tree at my grandmas to watch the sunrise and to my surprise the whole tree had a halo, I mean, there were thousands upon thousands of either some kind of fly or some kind of bee.  They were really curious because they were all very very still. You could barely see them move in the air, all the same distance from the tree and every once in a while one plunged straight to the flower and back to its place in the halo. They were black. Then from one second to the next they all left. It was a really strange and beautyfull thing to watch. Almost ritualistic.

If you loose it my friend, let me know, I can help you get more
