Cordyceps militaris: Fruits
    #13935427 - 02/09/11 08:28 PM (10 years, 9 months ago)

It took ages, jar was nocced around late october, took over a month to colonise. It pinned on the bottom so i had to move the sub, the top became matted and only pinned after i moved the sub but these were  not allowed to mature due to trich. Mushrooms grew for about 2 months, the plug was pulled due to a spot of trich.

Substrate was 2:1, wheat bran:BRF and gypsum. Hydrated with a standard potato infusion adjusted with LME, peptone and coffee, search 'medicinal cakes' for exact mixture as % w/v.

Awesome work.
Just 1 jar?
What was your method of "air exchange"? 4 holes in the lid with tyvek?

I'm inoculating cordy jars tomorrow, so this is definitely good inspiration.

12 mm hole tightly stuffed with polyfil, about half was removed and placed in a SG, the lid of the jar was removed once a day for air exchange. I removed more polyfil when I saw clear growth. About 10 days ago i removed all the polyfil.

Just that one for now. Ive got 3 more jars doing a new thinner sub hopefully i can get fruit without putting it a SG.

Im also wondering if any of you have noticed how stupidly slow this culture is on agar but gives visible growth overnight in LC.

I haven't tried it in LC but my culture was slow on everything else.  I grew one jar out on millet and quinoa and it took forever but finally colonized.  I've been trying to get it to fruit.  I thought it was getting going but seems stalled now.  I have all the polyfill out but it's mostly just sitting there doing nothing at this point.

Looks good man!

The culture is kinda slow. If you have some condensation on your plate( I know its a :nono: but it happens) The myc seems to run along the water and spread really fast. Maybe thats why its so fast in lc?

I also noticed that everywhere it touches on agar when you drop a wedge in colonises straight away. Maybe the myc is prone to tearing apart from each other easily. Maybe weak clamps are the cause? Just a guess.

Wow! This is amazing!
I wasn't aware that C. militaris can actually produce fruits without a special technique or substrate mixture. I was just planing to use the mycelium, so it's great to know that you actually can get fruits.
But now I'm wondering, how can you improve fruiting? On what substrate, without adding certain chemicals like some growers do, would it preform best, bag culture, tray culture, high or low humidity, high or low air exchange, etc.? If anyone has any knowledge or experience on these matters, it would be greatly appreciated!

@Badman
Looks good. Did you already try one? Can't wait to try that tea some day...

@Tangich,
Actually it is quite easy to fruit them as long as you have a productive strain. Just look for posts by Speeker and Cordyceps. You'll find everything there. Unfortunately Cordyceps' images are gone, but Speeker posted amazing ones from chinese production.

Hi Badman,

Congratulations for your work !

Which was the Cordyceps strain  that you used in your experiment ?

Have you seen my tests with the strain from Roger Fudd?

Cheers,

Wilson

Slow... the original plate I got from base still is not colonised. Im 99% sure this is the strain Tom gave to everyone, I dont know the name or anything, maybe one of you can tell me? It was so fast that i nearly threw out the LC but agar>>LC you know its good.

I obviously want to improve fruiting and keep the jar lid on throughout. A bag culture is plausible I wouldnt like to try a tray.

The first thing i did after the photos was to make a tea out of the two big ones, subtle flavour. Eating raw fruits gave me a weird sensation on the rear flanks of my tongue kind of like magic truffles but not and different area of my gob.

Ive seen your thread and most on this site use a similar method and chems which i cant get. My conditions were also a bit off.

Wilson,

I think Badman used CM/K-03 the strain I cloned from South Korea.

Nice work Badman please can you tell me when you put one fruiting body on a sheet of paper if it also lose spores ??

Regards

Tom

Hi Mycoelf,

I give you the advice to not buy the Cordyceps militaris from mushroom people this culture will not fruit. Here on the Shroomery is a post of Cordyceps militaris why I give a good fruiting strain away to the members of this forum for free. See there and ask some people from this post to send you a free copy of my culture.

Cheers for the info Tom, Ive made a note. I did put a larger shroom on foil covered it... It dried out significantly and seems to have not dropped anything. From the pics you can kind of see the darker spots around the apex, I reckon if it was allowed to go for longer then I would have got some spores and more mass.

I had no idea Cordyceps was good for A2M, this kind of info is good to know. Do I give to the Mrs as well? :awesome:

I have less than 5 days worth of stuff (powdered substrate), so the effects will be minor and short lived, even with regular dosing I dont think you will feel the difference. Ive been taking reishi daily for about 4+ months and I havent noticed anything, Im not saying there are no effects. Maybe someone more decrepit than I would feel the effects. I take for preventative rather that curative needs so low doses for all extracts/caps, unless its a food shroom.

Why thank U Mr Cordyceps, I searched the web over and no one seemed to have a commercial strain other than Mushroom people, I will inquire further, and thank you for your service to this community, much gratitude:rockon:

While the origin is the same, the strain is not necessarily the same.

That Korean producer does a lot of work to make sure their strains are good.
http://blog.daum.net/mush-spawn/

Cloning and selling them for one's own profit is pretty lame, IMO..

And congrats from me too, badman!
