Drug agents confiscate buried $500,000
New details emerge about massive drug pipeline after defendants appear in federal court

Federal agents found more than $500,000 buried in the crawl space under a house on Sparkleberry Lane where alleged drug traffickers lived.

Agents have not counted the cash, but the amount could exceed $1 million, a U.S. Drug Enforcement Agent testified Thursday morning in U.S. District Court in Columbia. The money was discovered Monday, two days after federal drug agents arrested seven people involved in a massive drug pipeline between Columbia and Mexico.

The agents were led to the money after they caught the younger sister of one of the alleged drug traffickers trying to break into the Sparkleberry Lane home, the agent said. They also discovered 3,000 ecstasy pills under the house, he said.

Although the raid was conducted Saturday, news of the case did not surface until Wednesday.

On Thursday, the seven defendants made their initial federal court appearances during which six of them waived their rights to a preliminary hearing. But new details about the drug bust emerged during the preliminary hearing for Faustino Soriano-Flores, who is charged with conspiracy with intent to distribute more than 1,000 kilograms of marijuana.

The seven were arrested Saturday after U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency investigators watched a tractor-trailer back up to a McLeod Road warehouse they had under surveillance. Agents watched through closed-circuit cameras as people began unloading marijuana from the truck, a DEA agent testified.

Shortly after watching the truck unload, agents raided the warehouse where they confiscated 2,200 pounds of marijuana. They also executed search warrants at two residences used as so-called “stash houses” for marijuana and two homes where the people lived, the agent said.

The raid is connected to two other high profile drug busts in the Midlands during the past year.

In January 2010, S.C. State Law Enforcement Division agents raided three Columbia homes and confiscated more than 2,000 pounds of marijuana and nearly $1.2 million in cash. One of the people arrested in that case – Guadalberto Morales-Salazar – has been identified as the ring-leader in the operation. After his arrest last year, Morales-Salazar was released on bond and fled to Mexico.

Then, in November, a Richland County Sheriff’s K-9 deputy stopped a truck hauling a swerving trailer on I-77 and discovered about 2,600 pounds of marijuana inside. The brothers inside the truck – Hector Solorio and Heriberto Solorio – were charged in November and were arrested again Saturday in connection with the Mexican drug pipeline.

Others charged in the case are Lucila Martinez-Vivanco, Gary Dean Farabee and Ignacio Andrade-Martinez.

Overall, the investigation and raids have led agents to seize nearly $2 million in cash and 8,000 pounds of marijuana as well as cocaine, ecstasy pills and weapons.

Money smells like everything sinful.  Dogs can hit on money, especially large amounts of it that have been concentrated.

I'd never "hide" money inside of a house, not that kind of sum anyway.
