Wanna get a motorcycle this spring

So I've decided I wanna buy a motorcycle come spring (or for spring). It's going to be my first bike, I plan on taking a course so I don't need to do the second test for my license and for general knowledge and it's the smart thing to do and all that.
Anyways my budget is around $2000-3000, so I'm planning on buying a used bike. I eventually wanna get a supermoto like a Husqvarna SM 610 (or 510 even) but they're a little out of my price range. I guess I could finance it but I don't know much about how that works and I guess its better to just use cash. So that leaves me with a choice of older, used sportbikes (which tend to be considerably less than most dualsports/supermotos that I find on craigslist/kijiji).
I was thinking maybe a Katana or SV650, any suggestions? I don't want something I'll outgrow and get bored of any time soon, but I want it to be at least somewhat forgiving while I learn.
Is it a bad idea to finance/start out with a supermoto like the one I listed? anyone with motorcycle experience know much about buying high mileage motorcycles? (I hear an engine rebuild can cost upwards of $2000 )
The last question is in regards to this craigslist ad I found CLICK ME think that's a good deal/worth it for my first bike? Or a headache waiting to happen?

i bought an R6 on a whim. never rode a motorcycle in my life except for some rides on a dirt bike....that R6 (yamaha) was THE FUCKING COOLEST thing ever. don't go for the 'good beginner bike' unless you think you can't learn very well. get what you really want, excluding literbikes.

Hmm, I always hear people saying that you should get a beginner bike while you learn because the bigger ones are unforgiving if you mess up somehow, also if you put it down it'll cost you allot more.
I'm also kind of torn between a sportbike and a supermoto. Either way I'm sure riding a bike is fun as hell, and sportbikes got the cool factor going for them. But I always hear/read people saying supermotos are actually allot funner to ride than a sportbike. they're like a dirtbike built for streets and feel almost illegal to ride apparently. I guess I'll never know till I try em though, maybe I'll get a sportbike and if I get bored of that I'll move on to a supermoto (rather than a bigger sport bike lol, who really needs all that power, especially in the city/suburbs).
I know I'm a quick learner and have no worries about that, I've just been told many times to stick to beginner bikes or anything below 600cc as long as they aren't a supersport like an R6, CBR, or GSXR etc.. but I don't wanna get bored, and most importantly I want it to be fun.
I think the biggest thing stopping me from getting a bike like an R6 or CBR is the price, used ones can be cheaper but I'm sure insurance for those will be sky high, especially seeing how I'll only be turning 20 in 2 months.

I always wanted to get a motorcycle too, but as I age, I just have to admit that I become more and more of a pussy each year... I better get one soon, or I'll end up hearing myself saying "oh my, those things are so dangerous" like my mom and my girlfriend (team anti-me) always say when I talk about buying one.

just from your posts, you seem to have it together. don't settle for the a pussy ass bike, seriously. get what you want. R6 CBR GSXr, whatever the sport, they're bad ass crazy fun. Its possible to still be reserved on one too! jeez i don't know what the big deal is with people saying you HAVE to start on a small bike....irritating.

Haha, I know exactly what you mean. It seems as if in the last year or so I've grown a worried feeling/voice that tells me I shouldn't do certain things 'cause I could hurt myself. It's getting worse and I don't like it But I've always wanted to experience riding a bike, so I don't think I'll be pussying out on this one. I'll at least educate myself though so I'm not another dumbass wrecking while I show off on my new bike.

id like to get a v-strom to start out.
eventually (if i can afford it) i want to get one of those BMW R1200s. a 1200cc bike for a beginner is suicide. and $18k for a first bike is lunacy.

I'd love to get once of those bikes or a Triumph Daytona but I don't think I can afford those anytime soon

I hear BMW bikes last a really long time if you maintain them well

yeah the R1200 is built for both on and off road and looong distances.
i want to take two bike trips in the coming years.
1. Philadelphia to Buenos Aries. probably buy a ticket on a shipping container to come home
2. Morocco to Vietnam. have to have it shipped back.. id fly home.
that BMW seems like it would be the perfect machine. either that or a KTM of some sort..

ah yeah, I've read about people going on long touring trips on dualsports. I could just never imagine sitting on a bike like that for so long to be too comfy

meh.. depends how fast you want to get through it.
those trips i mentioned would take me at least 6 months.. i couldnt imagine doing it any faster. at that pace i would stay wherever i ended up for a few days.
its a lot less about the bike than it is about the trip. i could do it in a car if i wanted to.. a bike would be a lot cheaper and better in the cities though.
