Outdated technology????
there are many old hacker/phreaker type pages like this floating around the net. I was wondering if any of this technology could still be used, or if its all been outdated.
Of course i have no plans on useing any of it, i was just wondering.

well ask about a specific device instead of a group of devices. some stuff still works. phreaking is about outdated as almost all the switches and stuff are digital now and can't use the 2600hz and other tones to access supervisory controls. also anything broadcasting without the fcc's approval can have some bad problems like interference with other devices and can bring u alot of trouble too.

It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. alot of trouble too.
your not kidding, the terrorist act that was passed months after the 9/11 ordeal can be interpreted in such a way that punishment of hackers that effect economy or public systems, can be sentanced to life in prison.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty." -Al Einstein

Nope, payfones now use pulses instead of tones. The pulses cannot be heard, but you still can steal a payfone.

I remember I was doing this before I had internet access, only about 5 years ago.
I was leet before leet was a term. I used to crack scanners and shit. I used my head, no everything is about 3-4 clicks away. Sucks in a way, totally cool in another.

My friend used a redbox yesterday.. You mean to tell me they just changed them today? Some payphones never allowed the use of a redbox- COCOTs (Coin operated customer owned telephones) I really think you're mistaken to say redboxes don't work anymore.

some phone phreakign still works, or atleast it did like 3 years ago...
Calling 1-800-collect using a Fake credit card number and then saying it is an international card used to work for me, but I haven't tried it in (like I said) like 3 years...

redboxing still works and always will. the trick is to call information and pay the 75 cents with the tones. you can also drop a nickel in and then use the box afterwards. this is how it works in ks at least....

A few years ago in sweden you could go to a card payphone and dial the number service and ask for any number after they hung up you ?could make a really loud whistle in to the phone and you would have a few hours worth of credits.

Never heard of the 811 ringback, but you get the same effect dialing 998 and the last 4 digits.

Yeah, the ringbacks change from NPA to NPA and from prefix to prefix. 952 in the 785-8XX area....

I wasn't talking about customer-owned fones, I was talking about the payfones that the fone company owns. Customer-owned payfones hardly exist anymore.

You're mistaken TheInvizibleMan. Redboxes do still work. Call information from the payphone or call long distance. When the recording comes on to insert $XXX, hit your redbox and by god it will work. At least in my area it does. As far as I know the speaker on the phone just has to be on. There's some places you can still use a bluebox. 3rd world countries and shit far back in the backwoods
