The World Health Organization has received over 150 reports worldwide of people falling ill with this respiratory infection. Symptoms include a fever in excess of 38.5?C/101.3?F
There have been some deaths and an entire hospital staff in Vietnam and many other hospital workers have been infected. The disease has been found in Canada, and two infected individuals have passed through the US (one in Atlanta), but thus far there are no reports of the infection in the US.
Sounds like this could be a serious threat... let's all go watch 12 Monkeys

SARS
Severe Acute Respitory Syndrom.
The good news is, it doesn't kill everyone it infects, like meningigitis.
The bad news is, it's airborn.
Be prepared for the new aides. If they can't cure the common cold, they probably can't cure its bigger, older brother.

Normally, i wouldn't give a fiddler's fuck, BUT when you have 2 hospitals in your immeadiate area close down and see people wearing sterilized masks at the grocery store where you have shopped comfortably for a few years the reality of SARS hits home

Yes, this is very concerning, I hope they find the cure for this really soon. I will be traveling through Toronto on Thursday, and you can bet your dollars that I will be wearing a surgical mask through the airport... I'd rather look dorkie than dead!

No, it's not airborne. It can be spread through coughing though, from little droplets, but it is not airborne.
4% death rate, the risk is not that high. The odds of you actually getting it are very slim. So, calm down you nervous twits.

hmm, it acts alot like the bubonic plauge id say, the mortaity rate is low, but then we have alot better health care then in the dark ages. you think its a low risk now? wait until summer, when the humidity is high, evryone is out, mosquitos start biting, or wait til it hits a cities heroin addict ppulation, OR a city with a severe rat infestation that interacts with people enough for fleas to transmit the disease. or what if it hits the third world, maybe it already has and nobody cares. after all nobody gives a fuck about starving children with all hooplah.
they actually havent identified the virus yet, they think its a coronavirus resembling herpes or measles.
thats too bad, because chances are anyone tested will have had these ailments and the virus' found would be present anyway.
perhaps most of the cases reported are simply pnemonia, people get it all the time. only the DEAD ones are sars. again i say WAIT till it hits the rat and mosquito population.

i was just sick as shit too. had waves of high fever. coughing like a madman. massive everlasting headaches. my whole body felt sore. couldn't eat much...just shittiness. and it seems everyone around me become sick at the same time.
i definately get bit by mosquitos at least once a day and my state has a huge influx of people from asia. but i feel a little better. i don't think i had sars...but i don't know. i was definately down for the count though. not an average sicknes for me...but i don't get sick very often at all.

Its not that the people that are in the hospital with SARS are being cured, they're just prolonging their death.
The other thing I've been thinking is, what if SARS doesn't even exist? What if the people that have died are just people that would have died in the last month anyways.....the people in the hospital just have a cold, broncitis, strep, the flu....and the media and government is just trying to scare us? Maybe this is all a ploy to to get the Canadian's to go to war.....this virus is a terrorist virus that was dropped on us by iraq....and they're just blaming the asians......or I could just be paranoid....everything about SARS is pretty vauge tho

No, they are being cured. Only 4% of the people who get it die. With the flu, it's 7%.
Also, Mitchnast, how do we know that it can be transmitted by mosquitos?

Uh, dude, that just sounds like a normal stomach virus. This is nothing new, people have been getting them for all of recorded history.
I think people catch things like that on average, every two years. The reason the people around you all got it at the same time was because one of you had it, and spread it to the rest of you.
How come we come up with shitty names for diseases now?
If this surfaced in the 1800's, it'd probably be called the Sputtles.
Or Chink Pneumonia.

I've never died from the flu before. I'd be frightened if everytime I got the flu I had to get checked out for some deadly illness.

No, it's not that weird. At any given time, a few million people the US probably have colds, and are spreading it amongst the people they know.

i guess it just a neat little coincidence then...how we're all healthy individuals, living in a tropical climate and all getting sick at the same exact time. while some infectious flu is going around....yeah, it's not wierd.
