Does anybody have a rule of thumb with cakes and casings?

Basically, if a person were so inclined to take substrate cakes from quart jars and incubate and then when colonization is reached on the cakes this person were to make casing substrate such as vermiculite, manure/compost, Jiffy Mix, calcium carbonate, oyster shells, or whatever one wishes to use and begins the casing process. If a person used a rubbermaid container w/ lid that was 1 ft. long and at least 3" deep what is a good rule of thumb on how many quart jar cakes should sliced or crumbled over the casing substrate material.

So, basically, does anybody have an idea on a measurement like quart per foot or mililiters per foot or some kind of measurement to make the numbers of cakes used in a sq. foot of casing to not be to much or to little.

Supposedly, it should be around (the substrate layer) 2"-3" deep, of course, being on top of a 1/2" layer of vermiculite and topped with a 1/2"-3/4" deep layer of 50/50 mix. So, if the casing mix is required to need something at least 4"-5" deep and opaque for no light to come through and it is about 1 foot long or if you can take any length and measure it out to a amount of colonized substrate cake.
