Cake cut
    #1361591 - 03/09/03 10:44 PM (21 years, 1 month ago)

The hooligans down the street were reading about cutting cakes in half to yield more shrooms. They asked me to ask if it was true that the more surface area the more shrooms? So cutting a 1 pint cake in half would yield more then a one pint whole cake....right?? Or how about a 1 pint cake cut vertically and put flat side down( ya know like a rainbow type shape)? Do you think it would yield more? HMMM...what do you all think about it. The hooligans are very curious creatures.

I find cutting them or crumbling them does produce more fruiting site so more fruits  myself

I understand that during casing one would 'crumble' up their developed mycelium into a larger container containing both growing medium and more food thus creating a larger flush. Now at the same time everyone says not to handle the cake too much because it will ususlly bruise blue and no primordia will form there. Now if crumbling helps...couldn't you cut the cake revealling more surface area and get MAXIMUM mushies??If one were to cut intstead of crumble wouldn't it damage the fragile mycelium less??

You're as cute as a button! Good luck! Have you considered just casing your cakes instead of exerting a comparable degree of effort to get halfway there?

Yeah this snake I know mang says he wants to try casing but he would like to master the art of pf Tek first...The way he sees it if you can get the mycelium to grow youve won half the battle. I guess the next question is how thin or thick can a cake be cut and still produce the maximum amount of very potent mushies? I've even heard of some people putting their mycelium in a food chopper and breaking it up for use in the colonization of another jar of substrate.i.e. instead of going through the trouble of innoculating more jars some millitants have used allready developed mycelium and 'trans-planted' if you will these small portions into prepared sterile medium...therefore forgoing the "bunk"jars that never form substrate. What do you guys think??Anybody try this yet???

If you want more mush why not just go with a bulk substrate? The first thing I ever had were 2 mycobags that I innoculated with B+. I read RoadKills poo tek and spawned my bags and every jar since straight into the wonderful manure. I think its easier than trying to fruit a cake.

Hear! Hear! This guy I know once had a single maz grow from a cake to a height of 6". A week later he had an obscene amount of pins from a cake that had been cut in two, most of which aborted, that grew to be much smaller. There is an advantage to smaller fruits, however: they are easier to dry. Tell your boyfriend he's as cute as a button!

poke, not true. It's proven that a properly grown casing will outperform, in terms of yield and weight, pf cakes by themselves. I'd tell ya to search, but it doesn't work. And about the smaller fruits, uh, ever heard of slicing big mushies down the middle? Dry em like that, same difference...

Yes, casings produce larger fruits than cakes, but, relative to this, I still believe that there is a pretty consistent weight:substrate ratio.

My boyfriend thinks he's Mr Wizard. He loves sitting around and thinking, and thinking of new ways to do things. He wishes he had someone he could personally discuss things with, but ya know how it is these day. Well thanks everyone, I hope he got his answers...I also hope he was able to get through what he was actually saying/pondering/asking....

heres what id have to say about this, i dont think its the amount of mycelium but the surface area of the mycelium say you took 1 pint cake and spread it evenly in a container of 5 in squared, then took another and spread it evenly in a container of 10 inches squared, i beleive the 10 in. will produce more. so with the sea of shrooms tek cutting the cake in half should produce more. hell you could prolly even cut a half pint cake into 3 pieces for that.
