birthed cakes not progressing.

Ok, a guy has 5 birthed BRF/verm cakes in a terrarium. They're kept between 72-74 deg F. The RH remains at ~90 percent. He fans them out 1-2 times a day, and lets light in for a little while each day, but not much. The cakes only show little bumps and maybe the tiniest of pins 2 weeks after birthing (he dunked and cold shocked them for about 18 hours). What's wrong with this picture? Is the fact that he doesn't give them that much light really holding back these cakes so much that there's been little change in almost 2 weeks post-birthing? Or is there something he's leaving out?
Thanks!

Ok, he'll figure out a way to do it (it was kept kinda isolated in case the landlord popped by, like Mr. Roper). I guess he was just surprised that the light difference was holding them back THAT much, y'know.
Thanks!

Your humidity should be at 95% or greater to fruit cakes, and a few minutes of light per day is plenty.

Yup.....sounds more like a humidity thing to me. Cakes require humidity at least over 95%.

in an alternative experience... the humidity is VERY nice, and the cakes have like all these whispy curling mycelium jetting off the cakes. white as can be and vigourous! look like they are going to explode but they still look whispy, you think its a pin but its just like strange mycelium growth jetting out. its not cobweb or anything like that theres just no pins. could it be overlay? they get very little light for a couple of minutes a day, theyve been birthed for a little over a week now and no signs. could light do the trick? or is it about to pin?

If your really woried about the light, you can probably fit a batery operated light source in there. You have to find something that will last a long time. I recomend the 6inch diameter touch lights advertised on tv. You can put one in the box or whatever, and the batery should last a month or so I think. Mush responds to almost any spectrum so you could even use a little LED if you are the electrician type. Your shit really only needs 10 min a day though...

Give each cake a thin layering of sterilized wet vermiculite; on top and around the sides. Spray lightly each day. Or, you could just case, but it will be as long as 14 days for fruits.

Thanks for the responses- Unfortunately, he has: 1) the bottom covered in perlite with plenty of water/h202 2) warmth provided by a heater in a jar w/ no cover/lid 3) an extra jar of water/h202 sitting to the side of that and still the RH never gets above 90% - what gives? :-P
He'll pick up a taplight and stick it to the inside of the lid, and perhaps that'll settle the light issue...but he's stuck on why the RH won't go any higher.
Here's hoping - no rush - his birthday's in 2 weeks, and if he can have fruits by then, he'd be thrilled. (but if not, eh, late birthday)

I'd case them.
