TFT Monitors
    #1344319 - 03/01/03 04:16 AM (21 years, 1 month ago)

I'm thinking of replacing my aging 15" CRT with a 15" TFT monitor.
My main use of the PC is www design, photoshop etc, but now and again I'll go and get my arse kicked  on a multiplayer FPS

Anyone got any experience on playing FPS on TFTs, 'cos I heard there are issues with screen latency, refresh rates, compared to CRT monitors

Thin Film Transistor aka LCD, the technology is progressing nicely. Refresh rates are going to be at 16ms soon. Right now at 25ms the picture is nice. The nice ones now are as good or equal to CRT. If your going to be doing a lot of desigh and photoshop you will notice a difference because not many colors can be supported. If you get a good one, latency is negligable and you won't notice. Your best bet it to look at it in a store in action before you buy, and read reviews online.

Thats the main reason why I'm holding off getting one. Sure, they have a nice picture, but the refresh rates are slow as hell.

refresh rates aren't the same. Since CRT keep scanning, they look best at 85Hz or higher, but LCDs look best at 60Hz. If you get a good one only thing you'll notice is that you can't get 32 bit color.

That's not true. I'm running a NEC LCD1700v with a nvidia GeForce4 TI4600. 60hz refresh, 32 bit color, 1280 X 1024 res.

I would recommend a CRT for your primary photoshop workspace. TFT colors can change depending on the angle you are viewing the screen at, and if you are not at the optimum distance, you might not select the right colors. I have a dual screen setup with my main monitor being a 19" Viewsonic CRT which was calibrated with one of those Pantone Spiderpucks or whatever they are called and I also have a 15.5" TFT as my pallete screen, secondary workspace. If I do any work on the TFT, it may look good on there but the colors could be off when viewed on the calibrated CRT or other minute patterns you can not see on the TFT.

ive gotta agree, lcd's colors are nice bright and vibrant, but their not quite the same... its hard to understand untill you start using one. I for one would rather use my CRT because the colors are what was ment to be seen. Also gaming on an LCD isnt bad at all. The problems though is that for the LCD to look real sharp and crisp it has to run at its native resolution (15" 1024x768, 17" 1280x1024) so the video card needs to handle these resolutions and be able to preform well.

Also a 15" lcd has the same veiwable area as a 17" crt, and a 17" lcd has the same as a 19" lcd

If your doing quite a big of photo working, i would have to suggest anyting with a trinitron tube, the two lines maybe annoying at first, but after a few days they go away, not physicly but you stop noticing them.
