so why exactly does a heating pad dry out the substrate and the fish tank heater does not? I don't understand...

The fishtank heater is kept in water, so it actually has a tendency to create humidity rather than dry things out.

From what I've read, heating pads emit dry heat, which can reduce the moisture level of cakes/perlite.

If you keep your jars sealed while incubating, drying the out should not be a problem becuase the moisture is trapped in the jars. I think heating pads are the way to go. It is easy to control your temp. But you have to be smart when you use them. I don't agree with everyone when they say that heating pads are a fire hazard, I've never heard of a bad incodent llike that. BUT...all the talk of fires made parinoid so when if you use a heating pad just be smart about it.

A guy I met in a bar said he thought he was the first person to use heating pads for incubation, but I guess he's been away from the 'community' for a while now.

There isnt a problem with it....try the same basic incubator setup....tub-in-a-tub, drill small holes around the perimiter of the inner tub, and one in the center...place the heating pad on a board larger than the pad, add about an inch of water to the lower tub and replace the inner tub....place jars in the incubator and you are set.

had used it for years with no fire and no dehydration....the water in the lower tub provides humidity and even heating....humidity isnt nescesary, but it does aid in preventing them from drying....

I've used mine for about 15 years and I never set the house on fire with it yet... or had the majority of other problems that others are plagued with...

they're not really a fire hazard unless your putting them by a bunch flamables. The temperature that paper catches on fire is about 415, and a reptile heating pad never reaches that. Plus when it's under a plastic or glass container with water in it, there's not going to be a big chance of fire anyways.
