Help with starting a band
    #1342878 - 02/28/03 11:19 AM (21 years, 24 days ago)

AFOAF is starting a band, and is going to be the singer.

AFOAF's friend went to check out microphones and everything that goes with it, and the guy at the music store said it would cost around $1000.00 for a singer because he'd need a .....

microphone($90)
speaker($300)
equalizer($500)

The need for an equalizer seems to me to be BS. The band is going to be a punk band. A bunch of fancy things are not nessesary.

What exactly would a small time punk singer need, and about how much should he pay?

fuck an EQ
For a right proper punk sound go for the cheapest Radio Shack mic your FOAF can get, and get several because they will break.
I'm not speaking from experience, I just think it's a good idea

Look in the classifieds for a used PA system, its all you need, if your playing shows the venue will hook you up with an EQ, or you can use the other bands. You dont need to start off with expensive stuff, just the bare minimums.

I just got recruited for a punk band, but im lucky, ive got all the best equipment at the tips of my fingers x 2, having two experienced members of other bands playing with me.

My trainging is as a sound tech and musician, singer and drummer.  As far as a mic is concerned, don't get a radio shack special.  They don't sound all that good and they break.  I would suggest looking into a Sure SM58.  They are tried and true and just about indestructable.  And you can get one used for around $120cdn.
When you get up close to them they have a tendencie to boost the low frequencies which wouldn't hurt in punk.
You could also look into an AKG 3700.

You will also need speakers and an amp to power them.  Again, used is good and cheap.  For a system that you can practice with and do small gigs a Yorkville MP8 is a good choice.  8 inputs, 2 main outs and 2 monitor outs.  150 watts a side out I think.  It also comes with EQ and effects built in.  I can't give you an accurate price but around $800cdn I think.  This is a chunk of money but worth it for a practice/live system.

This is pretty standard for a small bar band in my area but your choices are endless.

Just my two cents.  Good luck!

Go for an AKG condensor mike.

I use an AKG C-1000S for vocals. Very nice, but pricy. Not sure what just one mic costs. We got ours as a set of 7 in a sweeet hard aluminum case. Cost $2000 though....

if you're poor and/or small time, get the radio shack mic for $15 on sale.

if you're serious but still punk, whats his name is right, it's all about the SM58, because they can take a lot of damage.

don't try anything else. guaranteed anything superfancy will break.

Hey, thanks for all of your help guys. I didn't think I needed an equalizer. The mic names and everything else will help as well.

THANKS.

The guy at the music store is trying to rip you off. You can get a cheap but decent PA brand new for about $300, and I'm sure you can find a used one for much less. We got mics coming out of our ears, I don't know where they all came from, but Shure SM58s and SM57s are a dime a dozen and the best mic you can buy for that price range. For a higher quality mic, can't go wrong with a Shure Beta..which cost only a tiny bit more than the standard Shure mics..but they have a great sound for live purposes and are durable as fuck. AKG condenser mics are good, but expensive. You don't need a $2000 mic for playing gigs, that's for studio applications. A brand new Shure SM58 is about $80 last I checked.

Ok, i'm going to get a Shure SM58 mic I think. That sounds like a good choice.

Can anyone suggest anymore amps? The Yorkville MP8 that was suggested is a little pricy. It's more than the $300 that the music store guy said it would cost. And now i'm getting confused because sites that i'm reading are saying that they sell amps and speakers. Isn't that the same thing?

An amp is what provides the power to the speakers... they are usually sold separate, but often found in combos, such as the picture you have there.. that is a combo amp. SM58 is a good choice, you can't go wrong really. If it's an amp just for vocals you can get away with a keyboard amp or anything really. Look around and I'm sure you can find a good deal somewhere. However I do recall FENDER making a cheap portable PA system that includes amp, speakers, and mixer.. if I remember correctly it was about $250.

Don't you live near a rehearsal studios? That's what i do with my band... it costs about 15 quid (which is about 20 dollars or something) for 2 hours rehearsal with quite nice equipment. That's not too much if you've got a few people in your band like.

Lugging that stuff back and forth would suck, so we're going to set up shop in my friends room. It's a really small room, but in late May or early July he's getting a house with a basement.

As has been suggested by many, the Sure SM58 mic will be your best investment for the price. They run right around $100 new. Our singer uses a Sure Beta58A. It costs about $160. A good mic really makes a difference, and the Sure mics are pretty much an industry standard for live show applications. They can take a lot of abuse and they sound awesome. We are using a couple cheaper mics (AKG D60S) for backup vocals and the difference is amazing when you hear them next to the Sure Beta58A!

And just because you are doing punk rock (lots of yelling and distorted vocals) doesn't mean you can get away with a cheaper mic. In fact, I would say you almost have more need for a good mic!
