Look at this mess ! Can anything be done?
    #1341994 - 02/28/03 03:40 AM (21 years, 1 month ago)

My cat has just shown me his contaminated casings, what a mess!
Can anything be done for these casings or shall my cat just throw them away? Both have flushed once but nothing for a while. Are they dead?

nothing can be done for the first picture i would say but you maybe able to save part of the second by removing all the contaminated section. But this may be a waste of time as the green mould has sporated and will turn up on the uncontaminated section i would say :frown:

Its weird, my overall experience with casings has been quite frustrating. small flushes around the sides and contams is all I get. On cakes I am growing healthy monsters.
I have now recased the non contaminated area of the second pic. You never know, it might be ok.

thanks guys, behold the king of contam!

>small flushes around the sides

This is lack of moisture in the casing, spray daily with water, add a little H2O2 to keep contams out of the water.

>and contams is all I get

Wash your hair!
Joke  , review you sterile procedures, contams come from many places.

Good luck

My cat was using 100% coco coir. One layer at the bottom and one at the top.
Is there any benefit to using 50% verm?

people seem to have great luck with plain coir or coir/verm. i have no experience so i can't say.

50/50+ that i am familiar with is 50/50 peat moss/verm with hydrated lime as a buffer.

The only time my friend has ever seen a contaminated casing was when he used a wet bottom layer. Once. He has had 7 successful casings since then with abundant flushes with no bottom layer.

they are beyond dead. Mold at that point is spreading so so so so so so much spores aroudn. I hope you wherent waving that around your grow room or your gonna probably have some trouble in the future.

Clean that mess up and ditch that shit.

You can see green mold starting usually as a fast forming grey mass. As soon as you see some its best to pitch/ cut the section out.

One additional thing. The cakes were dunked for 12 hrs. in a solution of 25% peroxide and water first for hydration of the cakes. He uses birdseed. That shit is awesome!

You are welcome and good luck.

My cat never sterilised or pasteurised the coco coir! He had read that so many people had success without doing that, he just went for it.
My cat has lots of other coir casings and they are without problems. My guess would be some contam during the fanning/misting stage. Time to get some h2o2 I think.

i micro wave or oven cook all my material.Just to be safe.
No harm in doing it as a precationary measure in the futur.Just about 1 hour at 200?f in the oven covered and moist.
Or 5 to 10 mins on full in a 900w microwave in a dish covered in cling film.

Yeah, animals are a prime source of contamination

(Always sterilise/pasteurise coir)
