I have about desided to do some hiking this spring/summer
I've wanted to hike atleast some of the A/T for a few years now. The urge is about to set in. I'm not sure if I'll actually push for a thru hike being it can take up to 7 months to finish. However I'm prob looking at doing half of it this spring then doing the other half next year.
Has anyone here done any hiking on the A/T or pulled of a thru hike? I have hiked sections of it but never really stayed on it for weeks at a time.
I plan on trying to make it from GA to the VA state line @ yellow barn Yellow barn was used in the movie "The people under the stairs" Anyone else planing on hiking it this year?

I've hiked bits and pieces of the AT, but never done a through-hike. I've always wanted to, but never had enough time, or $$$. I haven't done any backpacking in a long while. It'd kill me if I had to more than a few miles.

Well it looks like my 7 month hike is on hold for now.(wife) However I've found another one I am going to do this year. I hope to me on the AT next March.
This is called the Mountain to the sea trail. It's in NC Mountains to the sea trail
It's close to a 1000 mile hike most of it can also be biked. It also runs thru alot of trail towns just like the AT. This is a good build up for the AT. It basicly works the same as the AT you have your basic Trail towns,Hostels, outfiters, post office mail drops, ect Another + is it is 100% K9 hikeable unlike sections in the AT where your K9 buddy has to be shipped thru and meet you on the other side of the park(smokies).
2003 is the target date for the finished trail.(it's 100% marked however u might still need to jump a creek or something untill fall. No 1 has hiked this with a GPS Logging so there is no GPS software around yet for this trail. (That is public)
I like hiking in NC so this will prob be a good trip. I also plan a few shorter hikes in NC and VA One I'm looking forward to is in NC to Rattlesnake Lodge
And 1 more link for all u hardcore backpackers or people wanting to get started hiking. PEPSI CAN BACKPACKING STOVE This is a simple 10 gram camp stove that will boil water in under 5 mins This really out does any stove I've used (even high $ ones) Save some cash and some weight and build 1. If you don't like this one theres a few different kinds using cat food cans and other cans. I saw alot of these on the AT last year seems to be the #1 choice in stoves now. You can also build a simmer cover for it and the stove will burn for almost 2 1/2 hours on 4 oz of fule.

I just found out the Mountains to the Sea trail has only been compleated 3 times by 3 guys sence it was built.(on record)
Each section and shelters a upkept by groups like Friends of the MST mostly local people use there area for hikes.
This make me want to compleat it even more being that I can be one of the top 10 to first hike it and compleat it.
Allen De Hart has wrote a guide to it if anyone is interested. Mountain to the sea trail Guide book The book is a paper back and costs about 18 bucks but is very much worth it. The profits off the book are used to upkeep trails and shelters and build foot bridges.
Heres a quick run thru on whats n the book The only comprehensive guide to the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, Allen de Hart's book allows hikers to hit the trail with confidence. It is organized around thirty-nine trail sections, each with detailed descriptions, maps, and photographs. De Hart discusses terrain, scenery, plant and animal life, rivers and streams, and historic sites; and his "campside stories" introduce hikers to local history and lore. Also covered are parking; provisions, camping, and lodging; rules and regulations; and health and safety tips.
I hope maybe this will spur some intrest in some of the hikers here and maybe draw a few to it. The books a good read even if your a day hiker (most of the points of intrest are off side trails that are mapped in the book.

I almost forgot I was also going to post on the Black Mountain Range
The Black Mountain Range is the Highest Mountain Range in Eastern America. It is also located in WNC I did these mountains last fall. It was a very nice couple days. Gr8t views + theres unmarked trails that will take you across the whole range without ever seeing 1 person. Another + is that the town of black mountain is below this range fairly close. That means Cell phone contact Thats always a big plus when out on ur own. Note if you plan on going and checking these out Do not do a search on the ranges folk tales.(you will scare yourself into not going. Theres some pretty creepy stories about this range. I can speak from exp. I saw nothing strange up there and was on the range for almost 2 weeks. I only saw 2 people for that fact and they were 2 hippy chicks. Grandfather mount. is another good hike but it's str8t off in places and lose shale make it scary at times. Not many people finish it most get off the trail and catch a shuttle up about halfway. The funny part is @ the halfway there a narrow trail that runs about 25-30 yeards at 12 inches wide. After that it's cool most people see this and catch the shuttle. Crossing it is well worth it because it smooths out past this point and not many people go past the ledge. There is usually some blowdowns on both of these ranges so plan with alittle slack in timing

Thanks for all the info Chills.
I lived in SC (foothills) for 21 years & always wanted to do a little hiking on the appalachian trail...but always put it off. Now I'm in Chicago and nothing but plains. But I was in NC this weekend and realized how much I missed the mountains. Perhaps I'll try and do a little hiking this summer. Thanks

I read a book once called A Walk in the Woods by a dude (I forget his name) who tried to hike the whole Appalachian Trail. It was really interesting and he gave a lot of good advice about getting ready for the trip. After reading the book I made the goal to hike the whole thing someday.

If anyone is thinking about hiking the AT next year let me know. I will prob be starting in late march and finish up late oct or early nov. (I hope )
I've been thinking about getting some local churches or whoever to sponsor me and maybe I can raise some cash for a good cause. St Judes childrens hospital Or something along that line. Thats one of the main reasons I'm not going to do it this year.(not enough time 2 plan it) I'm going to use the mountain to sea trail to build up for it. If you hike it both ways it's close to the same mileage as the AT. I usually hike alone with my dog. I don't know anyone who will get off there ass and go with me so if anyone is planing on going they would be very welcome company.

I haven't, but man, I'd love to.
I hope to do a few days on the Bruce trail in Ontario sometime this summer, maybe check out the new Trans-Canada trail as well if that's possible. Apparently you can do some mountain biking there as well.
I love long trips in the wilderness. Canoeing and hiking trips can be great, there's a certain point you can reach where only the more dedicated travellers will go. The only people with the dedication to travel that far will have a greater respect for the environment, and there's always a certain feeling once you get out there. The people you meet at that point will always be wonderful. I can't wait for the next time I venture out to that place.
