honey + substrate = ?

My pet iguana was jabberin' away at the tea kettle today, and they got to thinking that, if honey is supposed to be resistant to bacteria, why not chuck some in the substrate mixture? The carpet remembered hearing about how well honey-water jars work for cultivation of mycelium, as well as other things like potato dextrose. So they all ganged up on me and pestered me until I agreed to ask you guys.
Is this a viable idea? Have others tried mixing these ingredients in with the substrate material (rye in this case)? If not, why?
Please, someone help me out here, these inanimate objects won't leave me the hell alone!

I don't think it would work with grains. You have to pressure cook grains for 45-75 minutes, but you only do honey-water for about 15-20 minutes. If you do honey for more than 20 minutes, it will carmelize and the mycellium will not be able to process it.

Hmmmmm.....
what if one were to add the honey part-way through the sterilization process? Or sterilize both separately, and then mix (using, like, a honey syringe)?

think about the question...and then whether it makes sense... you *can* use honey in your substrate.... however, the main reason for using honey in water is for the honey to provide nutrient for the mycelium to eat. However, when you use substrate, the substrate provides those nutrients for the mycelium. I don't see that it is really a good idea to break the sterility in order to add something that it already has. the honey is *good* in honey water to make mycelium syringes to then knock up birdseed jars that have been sterilized, but it doesn't make sense to use it in a substrate.

I think that the idea was more of the use of honey to combat bacteria infections in the substrate...
Actually, like the original post states, it wasn't me that came up with the idea. I'm not completely sure what the point was either, but, like I said, I was asked to ask
Though, thinking about it, if one could colonize a mixture of honey and rye, that might make for an interesting treat... kinda like those chewey home-made granola bars, except with a lot more white fuzz and some interesting side effects

this reminds me of fungusmaximus' thread over at nansnook where he sucessfully grew on a liquid medium (bee pollen).

honey + substrate = Diminished Potency, ISRC [Re: eoPh]

[nb: SWIM = Someone Who Isn't Me; ISRC = If SWIM Recalls Correctly]
SWIM once did some research kind of along the same lines (starting off from two separate ideas, one being that of going a bit more indepth with the teks pertaining to liquid colonization (e.g., karo/honey tek), with the second piece of research geared towards finding a suitable replacement for tryptamine as a potency enhancing additive to the initial colonization 'food'.
During that research, I found it documented somewhere, in some (relatively chemically arcane...?) text that many simple sugars *will* inhibit the fungus-in-question's production of the alkaloids which it is known for.
I do not recall the source of this reference in print; sorry. Perhaps a search here will yield it; that, or some net-research (if you find a link, let me know, and if I recall the book/article/paper I'll let you know).

You say these inanimate objects won't leave you the hell alone, but if it is your iguana and the tea pot, unless you have a very lazy iguana, he ain't an inanimate object. That's what my stash tin says, anyways.

I've thought of using verm soaked in honey water to spawn poo, but if you are planning to fruit off it I don't think you'll see much happening.

He actually boil a pot of water with honey in it. Then he uses this water in place of the 1/4 cup regular water to mix.
pf tek w/honey.works well.
