New pressure cooker gasket
    #13401797 - 10/28/10 04:04 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

So I finally broke down and bought a new gasket today, and I couldn't  get the lid closed, after a search I saw someone suggest I stretch it, after already trying oiling/washing in hot water, I stepped on it, and tried to stretch it, it only stretched about 1 inch then broke, Guess I'm out $20,

Does that mean the gasket was defective? seems like it should stretch more than that.  I don't want to return it to the ma and pa store I bought it from and cause them problems unless I'm sure it should behave like that.

My old PC gasket is much more stretchy, I could easily stretch it 6 inches... unfortunately it seals for one run, then I have to give it a day to shrink back to its normal size to get the lid on again.

Do you think the gasket was rotted?  It seems like it should have stretched more than that.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Did you read and follow the manufacturer's instructions?

I just don't recall anything like that with any of the gaskets I've worked with.
Wash with warm soapy water and install, that's it. No stretching, and a specific admonition against oil of any type.

Maybe you got an old one?

How long did your original gasket last you?
Directions for gasket care will also be in your instruction manual...
Dont have one? call the manufacture or look online...

I think the original is from the 1980s, my mom used to use it to can back then, she hasn't used it for years...

the replacement looks older, no idea how old, but definately doesn't look like newer packaging.

Anyway thanks for looking, I saw quite a few suggestions on this board to other people to try stretching the gasket.

Thanks in advance.

Could it be that the replacement is ancient? In that case, taking it back is legit.

go jack one from the box at canadian tire. When my friend bought his, he grabbed an extra gasket from a different box. people have usually opened a few of them anyways

yah lol stealing is stupid, its not like I"m so poor that I can't afford another $20, just sometimes sucks to think you got ripped off with a bad gasket.

Also my model isn't for sale anymore lol I went to walmart last night looking for a replacement gasket, they don't even sell a PC of similar size to mine.

Take care all

yah I know, but ace would be the Ma and pa that I didn't want to bother, I'd have bought a replacement @ walmart and gave them the broken one back as a return, they have a streamlined system to return defective merchandise to the factory, where the guy at ace would probably throw it in the back room and forget about it and lose his money...

Stealing from Walmart is stealing. So I'm glad you aren't going to do that.

Got my eye out on CL for an AA used, not really ready to drop $400 plus on a new PC atm, and if I were to buy an AA new I'd want to buy the biggest and just get it over with.

just an update if anyone is interested, took the broken gasket back to ace, the manager said it would be no problem to get it replaced, he got teh correct gasket for me and now everything is working out happy and such.  Ace is great, I know they charge an extra 4 to 10% over walmart, but its good to support your local store, can't always drive all the way to wallyw orld and you don't want to wake up one day without the option
