South east england Mushroom Identification needed
    #13331645 - 10/13/10 03:41 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Hi guys, first attempt at finding mushrooms, was looking for liberty caps but pretty sure these arn't caps (only seen online pictures anyway) These were found in kent in south east england...

Habitat:
Found in a field with some cows, mostly growing in small groups near old cow manure.

Gills:
dark brown

Stem:
average stem length about 2 inches

Cap:
cap diameter seems to level off at about 10mm, remaining round as can be seen from the picture, some featuring a slight bump on the top of the cap but not a 'point' like I would expect to see on a liberty cap

Spore print color:
Not done yet

Bruising:
Seem to bruise to dark brown, no sign of blue tints.

Other information:
Mushrooms smell old and damp, if that helps as far as mushroom identification go?

I don't know anything about mushrooms so am relying on you guys for an accurate identification!

Looks like Panaeolina foenisecii, spore print it to be sure.  Should have a brown to ambiguous dark (Not jet black) spore print.

Edit:  You may have some Panaeolus cinctulus mixed in there, those will have a jet black spore print (Not some shade of brown).

This mushrooom was found as part of a large crop growing out of a dead tree stump.

They have a 1cm thick stem, around 4-6cm long, and the caps are around 3-5cm in diameter, some larger.

The spore print is dark yellow/khaki.

Smells like an edible mushroom.

Thanks!

Can't tell from that photo, but at the very least, most aren't. Look like panaleous.
