Autoclavable Bags
    #1325182 - 02/21/03 04:03 PM (21 years, 1 month ago)

Hey folks. I have some questions involving autoclavable bags.

Inspired by sporework's Rye-Z Morph bag, I figured an AC bag would be cheaper and less hassle than a Quart Jar for making spawn.

I read "lab notes" on a AC bag preparation at sporeworks, but unfortunately I don't have a flowhood, nor have the resources atm to make one.

If you are unfamiliar with a Rye-Z Morph bag, basically it is just a bunch of pre-cooked sterlized rye grains in a AC bag.

Anyone have a good way to prepare rye grains in an AC bag w/o the use of a flowhood? I am currently in the process of getting AC bags and an impulse sealer. I already have two large pressure cookers and a bunch of organic rye berries/grains.

I asked around to people who sealed before putting the bags in the pressure cooker. This resulted to AC bag explosion or AC bags full of hot air when taken out (basically they were balloons).

Thus, if you have any suggestions for me, I would gladly appreciate them.

Thanks!
daba

do the rye like you would with jar simmer then drain. then put it in your bag seal all 3 sides of the bag 3 times so no leaks then make a one for polyfill or what ever your going to use.one of them hole punches work good. put your poly fill in then load it with your rye then seal it shut 3 times them PC at 15psi for 60min keep it off the bottum of the PC it will melt put it on top of jars it's ok for the sides to touch.after it's done PC innoc like you would a jar

tape it semi-shut, prepare rye as normal, pressure cook, seal when done.

They are. You just need to make sure that the inflated volume is more than the total p.c. volume. If the p.c. volume is more you need to put things into the p.c (a cooking pot of appropriate size on top of a plate works well for dude's 941).

best of luck

This guy puts his grain in a spawn bag, then kinda rolls up the excess bag, squeezing the extra air out of the bag. Ties that up with some cotton twine and throws it in the PC. Don't know why you would need a flow hood for this... is that for doing G2G transfers?

it's easier, you can allow cooling bags to cool in front of the hood - then grain to grain, or agar innoc without worry of contam.

It's definantly not necessary though.

Thanks.

This is what I plan to do:
Fill the AC bags with grain, then roll up all the un-used AC bag part, and clip it with a clip of some sort, or tie it with some string.

Should I let it cool inside the PC or should I take it out immediately and let it cool outside of the PC? I know the bags have to be cool to seal them.

Thanks!

My experience has been that it is best to take the bags out immediately so that you can shake them up. If you don't, you will end up with soggy substate at the bottom and dry substrate at the top.
