Wanted to give this little guy a try. Now, for the organic bird seed. What is the essential ingredient in it that makes it good for substrate? is it millet seeds?
Alternatively, where can i buy the substrate already pre made?

You can use millet. Or really any grain. But there's better ways than a CD spindle.

Im aware of that, just wanted to try something small.
I have some PF teks going right now and i think i will try a simple casing with 60/40 verm+coco coir in a short while as well

Ok, that said all grains are about the same- but rye is the easiest to get right the first time. Starting with rye berries is worth it, even if you end up buying them at the health store for too much. Millet is smaller and lighter and trickier to work with compared to rye.

Make your own, don't buy grain jars. It's like having your dinner flown in. You have a pressure cooker? If not, get one. Thrift stores will have small ones for $10-15.

Yea i have a pressure cooker.
For a future casing, is it beneficial to buy the casing mix pre made or do it myself?

Generally you won't case with cubensis, you'll spawn to bulk, then fruit that uncased. But cased grains work fine. I've had great luck using premixed stuff, either Jiffy Mix Seed Starter or MGMC. If you really get into casing later on, it's a lot cheaper to make your own.

what do you mean by spawn to bulk?
And what mushrooms do you generally case with?

You have a lot of reading to do! Here is one of my favorite posts: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11961453 The coir and poo/straw sections are about preparing bulk substrates.
The last time I grew the 50/50 casing layer for cubes was all the rage and I had good results with it. Currently, the consensus seems to be that fruiting uncased is better for cubes.

Not so much that "uncased is better" as that there's usually no particular benefit to it with cubes.* Lots of species require casing and some are very specific in their demands. Cubes are just mellow.
*Except when casing grains. Some people say that's outdated too, but I think it works great.

Do i was looking at your mono tub thread ( props, btw )
Could i use your WBS tek and use that as the spawn? I have a 12.5 gallon tub that I already had set up for a shotgun terrarium. It sounds like it would suffice seeing as i would need to tape the bottom anyway, correct?
For the substrate, perhaps a 60/40 verm coco coir?

And would it be at all worth doing a casing on PF tek cakes that are not fully colonized, as in, stopped growing?

When you do Pf tek and dunk and roll them, the roll is esentially casing them.

True. No benefit to 'casing cakes' in the ordinary sense of the word as it's being used here; crumbling and casing.
You do want to roll or at least double-end case with verm.
