Squatting and powerlifting ?'s

So i just finished my 3rd workout power lifting at the drop in center in my new city, and i have a couple questions:
1) Is Squatting on a Smith rack inferior to free squats? Why?
The gym i am going to (inner city drop in center) has no power rack. I saw a guy today who figured out a way to use the bench press stand to get into a free squat, looked awkward though. He raised the bench press bar cradles as high as they would go, sat on the bench, faced the top end of the stand seated and lifted up, and then backed up off of the bench stand, turned and started squatting. Looked awkward, and sort of dangerous. Is this commonly done, and should i consider this?
2nd) How fast should i be adding weight to each lift, and in what increments?
I am currently deadlifting 185, squatting 185, and benching 105 and doing 3 or 4 sets of 10 or 12, dropping 10lbs or so each set.
Anyways, discuss.
PS: i love the brevity and intensity of these workouts!

Why did you delete your post? It was completely right.

I think he was referring to the fact that most people here love kettlebells, although mixing up between heavy lifting and kettlebells is necessary

Totally. Fair enough though - i remember what he said.
I'll stick with the smith machine for now.
Maybe i'll look into learning front squats with the awkward free bar.
Destroyed today, by the way.

Using free squats I hear is a bit better because you have to reeeeally brace yourself involving other muscles and activating more stabilizer muscles.

FRONT SQUATS!
If you have a platform to lift from (which you should have doing deads anyways) learn to clean properly and do front squats. Can't do as much as back squats, but is nicer on the back I find (for my super tall lanky type). It is great for strong abs and core and very good balance. If you go out of good form you have to drop the bar, which is much better than wrenching your back.
-------------------- "A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'Universe'; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security." Albert Einstein

Hack squats. I can't do squats at home, so this is what I do. Its a bitch, but I can do it. I hack about 250. 5x5.

To some, fallen trees are ugly. But in reality, it is the circle of life at its finest. This is a beautiful world, its time that we recognize that before its all gone."

Hack squats are working well for me, although i find them quite awkward. Although they totally destroy me, i am sore and exhausted for about 3 days afterwards.
Instead of doing 3x10 dead's at 180, i've gone upto 3x5 at 245 which seems to be more effective.
Thanks for the advice guys.
