My Families First "rough camp"
    #13130971 - 08/31/10 08:50 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Found a cool spot up in the Olympic National Forest.    Parked right on the river at the base of a waterfall.

Wasn't too "rough" as it was only 0.25 miles away from the car, but having no facilities with 4 women and myself being the only guy, I thought we did pretty well.

Unfortunately we got rained out today.  Decided that having a 3 and a 4 year old sitting in a tent ALL day waiting for the weather to clear was going to drive us crazy.  So we packed up and decided to come back when it's hotter.

The scenery was spectacular.  Waterfall going into a clear and deep blue pond, and then slowly trickling over some rocks and on down the river.  Perfect for swimming for the adults, and the kiddos could play in the shallows.

The only people we saw within 5 miles of our camp was the lady I pulled out of the ditch.  She stopped by to say thanks later in the evening, but other than that it was just our party of 5 the entire time.

Next time this is the plan:

1) If the weatherman says "rain", re-schedule.
2) Don't bring everything and the kitchen sink.  Even though it was only 1/4 mile from the truck, it was a bitch carrying all that stuff back and forth.

Wow looks awesome.
Wish I could talk my old lady into something like that.

She actually grew up camping, but now that she's gotten me into it, I'm really liking the idea.

The only disappointing thing this weekend (not including the rain) was that I didn't find any Chanterelles at all.  I was quite surprised as I know they're growing close to my home, and this spot seemed ripe.  But it was barren of mushrooms.

It's still too early for chanterelles.
This story reminds me of when a camping trip I took in High School.
Me and 3 friends headed out to the Hoh Rain Forrest in early December.
It started raining and didn't stop for over 30 hours. On the 2nd night we packed up all our wet gear, collapsed tents, and just stuffed it all into the back of the car and took off.
We went and got Thai food in Olympia just before closing time. It was bittersweet.

Naw, we start getting chants here mid-late summer.

Here's August 8th

I hear the Hoh is spectacular.  I'll be heading out there sometime soon I hope.

Nice pic. I have always wanted to camp at Olympic National Forest. That is a beautiful waterfall behind you. Looks so serene.

Where at in Oly?  Those are my old stomping grounds before I moved a few hundred miles east.  If Port Angeles was still like it was 20 years ago, I'd have bought property out there.  But, it's turned into a shithole unfortunately.
