Bulk Recipe - Stamp of Approval
    #12887878 - 07/12/10 03:36 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Here's what my friend is planning to do; he just wants to make sure the following mixture doesn't raise any red flags among the more experienced cultivators here.

- 30% coir
- 30% straw
- 15% composted cow manure
- 10% verm
- 7.5% coffee grounds
- 7.5% gypsum (low magnesium)
- Additional vermiculite as needed for moisture/texture

Spawning is WBS, with a spawn/substrate ratio of 1:3 ( = 25% WBS)

Thoughts?

It looks good, but ime more than 5% gypsum tends to harden into a solid block:shrug:

With the composted cow manure take a sieve and run it thru it to take the extra bits of compost out of the manure.

Looks fine,  you can use any % of the first four.  Also if you haven't tried the gypsum yet go 5% with it this time to make sure it doesn't harden the substrate.

I guess I'll just replace the extra 2.5% gypsum with spent coffee grounds. Thanks for the quick responses!

Is the spawn ratio appropriate?

I use 1:2 but lots of ppl have great success upto 1:4.  I have seen fine results with so much as 1:6

Personally, I would flip your verm and straw percentages.

Texture. It will make it nice and fluffy.  I really like using about 30% vermiculite. It will also improve aeration and water uptake by the substrate.  Vermiculite will not contribute much to the nutritional value of the substrate.  Straw will contribute to the fluffiness of the substrate also, but I don't think it will significantly.  If you can find horse poo go for it since it will have straw in it.

Just my thoughts.

That makes good sense. Maybe he'll split the difference and go from 30/10 straw/verm to 20/20. Increase the airiness while retaining some nutrition. Thanks for the food for thought. :]

A 1:2 ratio might be better... My friend has a bazillion quarts of spawn and a very small apartment. Heck, maybe even 1:1!

I would keep the straw %the same. Just chop your straw to 1/2 to 3/4 in length. And it helps keep it fluffy and helps with water retention. I soak my straw in water with some coffee and liquid seakelp extract for 12 -24 hours. I love the texture and the results. My recipe is very similar to yours except I use chkn poo and horse poo mix instead of cow poo.

Aloha

this is too much trouble... What is the Idea of having so many ingredients?

other than that looks OK!

Thanks River!

When mixing, do you make the sub in parts, or mix it and pasteurize all at once? My friend is used to less complex bulk subs. :]

Well, the logic behind it is, by using a wide spectrum of ingredients, the mushies will have enhanced nutrition/texture. What one component lacks, the others may make up for. It's like... holistic shroom farming.

Of course, then there's the problem of eating vermiculite. On the bright side, it makes your poop and teeth glitter.  Just pretend it's christmas.

I mix everything at once. The coffee grounds and straw are wet everything else is dry. The grounds are fresh that day from the coffee house down the block.  I sift my gypsum in a baking sift and mix that with the coffee and staw first. Then I add the the poos and last the coir. Mix well in 5 gallon bucket. Boil water add nitrozyme pour in bucket, let cool and then it's tub time!

You don't need all that verm. Just stick with the standard which is 2 quarts of verm per brick of coir. The guy who's telling u to put all that verm has never even worked with straw.

How experienced are you?

Generally you want fewer vectors for contamination, not more. If you want excellent results with near 100% chance of success, just go with the standard coir recipe.

I see no point to adding straw to coir. If you gonna work with straw, use manure and worm castings, not coir.
