What is this? Georgia, wood chips
    #12866382 - 07/08/10 09:00 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Habitat:
I found this on a pile of Poplar wood chips after my dog knocked it over last night. They have been sitting almost a year in this location and this is the first time I have seen this mushroom in my yard. This is in Georgia in the southern part of welii territory.

Gills:
orangish? look pretty neat and i didnt notice them being attached
Stem:
Seemed pretty frickin thick!!!
Cap:
2-3 inches

Spore print color:
Will have this info ASAP, got them sitting on a paper towel now.
Bruising:
Cant seem to tell, the stems are so thick when i try to injure them i realize how weak i am!

Other information:
Odorless, but then again i smoke 2 packs a day...

are the stems fused at the bases?

they look like possible gyms but it's hard to say. do you have any pics of the stem/underside?

I think it's a Gymnopilus sp awell. Check for any signs of bruising.

The gills go all the way to the stem if that is what you mean, and the spore print is orange, the color of the mushroom. Bruising is either a darkish blue, or black, but they are HARD to bruise and I am not sure that coloration is a bruise or sun damage.

Well gyms aren't very easy to ID. After drying for several days, some of the gyms I found had bruised mildly blue... but, as I said, the process took several days.

So what can I do to tell if they are edible? I don't spend much money on food and would love to eat these if they were any good. Usually all i eat from hte yard are oyster mushrooms. I do not have  a microscope but I have something up to 60x if there is something i can see to tell what it is.

Yes I am a total n00b.

Pretty sure IF they are 'edible' it would only be for recreation, not nutrition.:tongue2:

Well, they are possibly gyms... which means you won't want to eat them if you're hungry. They taste awful, but some gyms have trytamines and other unknown psychoactive compounds in them.

The problem is that some gyms are psychedelic... and some are poisonous. There are many types.

My first thought was Gymnopilus ventricosus... but it would be nice if you had more pics.

If you are not interested in a psychadelic experience you can pitch them, they will not be 'good eats'

On the other hand you might want to continue to try to identify them just FYI or if they are active to give to a friend.

well i pinched the little ones at the base and BAM! its a blueish blackish color after siting for an hour.

Also I have a 6ft 5in tall 300lb test dummy, but I DO NOT WANT THEM TO DIE OR COME CLOSE. Are these "Safe to consume for a psychedelic experience?" or will it give you the sickness?

Your mushrooms are in the genus Gymnopilus.

They are not toxic and are likely to be active.

You might have an east coast version of G. luteofolius, which isn't usually quite as red as the west coast varieties.

If you cut the mushrooms in half is the inside purplish?

From my experience (also being from southern weilii territory) they look almost exactly like some gyms I found a short while ago (last month) however, my specimens lacked any veil remnants, were dry-ish, and did not bruise green, blue, or black.... they were thrown out. In all reality though, there were 3 medium sized mushies, which is not enough to do the trick I hear.

Great find, you give me hope in my great Gym hunt!
