Is Life after Death for real?

I got a little worried today. I thought to myself, what if religions only purpose is to protect humanity from the fear of death? That would be terrible. That would mean that when we die, we experience nothingness, like the time before we were born. I dont like the thought of me becoming nothing more than a pile of dirt. How can exist when my physical mind is being eatin by worms? Or is there more to it? Can I still be around after I die? Not in physical form ofcourse. Like in the form of energy?
I used to always go to church and deep down I truely believe in God. I just thought how depressing it would be if it were all false, but I guess that wouldnt really matter once I was dead. I'm sure I'm not the only person that's thought about this before, so enlighten me. I've accepted the fact that I'll be dead some day and that's fine, but wtf will happen afterwards? I live my life to the fullest and treat others as if they were me, so I'd say I'm a good person. Worthy of heaven? Someday I'll know, or maybe I wont, who knows? What if being a "good person" is pointless (in the end) and I'm just a member of a species of animal that happens to have an overactive imagination? What if we are all just brainwashed into believing?
My existence boggles my fragile little mind.

From a previous post of mine, maybe you didn't see it though:
"From what I've seen, two ideas are psychologically deep-rooted in man: self-protection and self-preservation. Makes sense if you want your species to survive. But we have developed concepts out of the instincts. For self-protection man has created God, on whom he depends for his own protection, safety and security, just as a child depends on its' parent. For self-preservation man has conceived the idea of an immortal Soul, which will live eternally. In his ignorance, weakness, fear, and desire, man needs these two things to console himself. Hence he clings to them deeply and fanatically. I do not identify with those things (God, Soul) or pretend to know "THE ANSWER". There is nothing wrong with saying I Don't Know. Actually, I find it a most honest answer. I just want to live an enlightened life (strive for knowledge) and die with no regrets or attatchment. Amen..."
I realize my way isn't the only way, but this is where I'm at right now.

If you find yourself fearing nothingness after death, think of this: you'll be dead and you won't know. You'll just be an inanimate object, contributing to the soil. Nothing great, nothing horrible, just nothing.

That would mean that when we die, we experience nothingness
If that's how it it, you should accept it. You can't change what happens to you when you die.
Or you could slowly become bionic as your body dies so that you can live forever until there is proof of an afterlife.
-------------------- What if everything around you Isn't quite as it seems? What if all the world you think you know, Is an elaborate dream? And if you look at your reflection, Is it all you want it to be?

Death is a part of life Life and Death a universal cycle All things are recycled and reborn Do not fear Death, be comfortable with death For it is life that concerns you now

The closest thing I do to "praying" is think in english to straighten-out my objectives.

I don't know if you can call that "close" to prayer.
An act of communion with God
Wouldnt that be cool if you could have two way communication?

I said closest thing to a prayer.....
OK allow me to rephrase: "I don't pray. Its simply indirect thinking."
