Exterminator/Fumigator while Coir Colonizes
    #12773554 - 06/20/10 01:32 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I am just spawned to two trays of Coir a couple days ago
and I just found out my apartment is gonna be having an
exterminator coming by to fumigate for roaches.

Not sure of the chemicals they will be using, or even when they
will be coming, but obviously I will have to leave the sub
colonized until and after they come.

My question, will the chemicals they will be using hurt and/or
contaminate my coir? What are some steps I can do to prevent this?
I have the trays covered in garbage bags already. I think I will
be putting them someplace high, and also am thinking of leaving
them outside on my balcony while this is going on.

Thoughts?

Outside is best if they're not also spraying the balconies.  Another option if you know approximately the day they're coming is to slip the trays into a large plastic trash bag and seal it tight.  There should be enough air in there to last a day or two.

This.

Also, apartment fumigations are usually nothing more then a few sprays in the kitchen.
Around the stove and refrigerator. Where roaches are mostly. Feeding off crumbs and
little things like that that get left around when you cook. Even after you clean
And a spray in the bathroom. If you are lucky. It's not like your apartment
management company is going to fork out the cash to detail fumigate each and
every apartment. These apartment management company types are are just trying to
get the job done as quickly and as cheaply as possible. Giving the work to the
lowest bidder. Mostly for the purposes of keeping up to code(s).

Pick a room or a closet the furthest away from your kitchen and bathroom, kitchen
mostly and do like Roger said and "slip into a large plastic trash bag and seal it
tight". You go get you an opaque plastic storage tub and place them in there. If
wanna be anal. Seal in tight in plastic trash bag along with placing into opaque
plastic storage tub.

I like the idea of placing them out side the best. Except for the fact that placing
them out side greatly increases your risks of unwelcome eyes falling upon your
projects stumbling upon what you are up 2.

Damn I'm glad roaches don't survive the winters up here.  It's been 20 years since I've seen a cockroach.

Our cabin is a haven for spiders all winter, so I'd hate to have to spray.  They move in during fall, and the Mrs and I herd them all into the bathroom(so they have access to water) until spring, when we catch them in coffee cans and take 'em to the garden. . .hundreds of them.  They freak out the in-laws and other guests so they never want to stay overnight here, which is fine with me.

My old landlord just used the "bug spray" excuse mostly just to snoop around.  They were in my apartment for less than 30 seconds, but I'll be damned if they didn't look in every room and closet.

In fact, a friend of mine is in the pest control business, and he said he gets a bonus for every apartment he turns in that gets arrested/evicted for drugs.  No shit.  Those are for housing projects, but still, HIDE YOUR GROW.

Call me paranoid, but the last time the landlord came through, I came to the door without a shirt on, told him to give me 10 minutes to "get dressed," and threw a blanket over my FC.  I also keep all of my supplies in inconspicuous boxes.

I can't wait 'til we get our house... :crazy2:
