Oregon June (spring & summer) Psilocybe Cyanescens - yes, with proof :-D
    #12771709 - 06/20/10 12:32 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I'm happy to report finding some Ps Cyanescens in June in the Portland Metro area.
About 3 days ago I was driving by my favorite ps cyanescens patch. This particular patch provided me with extremely large fruitings in the fall of several thousand mushrooms. When I looked at where the patch normally was, I noticed 4 or 5 full grown cyans. However they were already munched by slugs, and past their prime by at least 3 days.
The nice thing was that there were several healthy pins growing also.
I of course immediately wanted to take pictures and tell all my shroomery friends. I didn't however, because I had no way to prove they were from June. I recall seeing a post a while back where someone claimed to have a spring cyan, but they had a horrible picture, and no way to verify the date of the shot. I was not going to let that happen to me cause that guy got pretty flamed.
Anyhow, I went back today with a dated receipt with me so I could take the following shots...

....and no, I have no reason to think that they are Ps Subaeruginascens, though I do recall a recent post in which someone claimed to be finding tons of spring subs in their fall cyan patch.

I'm not sure how well they are going to continue to grow, but its really cool that they exist for now. Am I overly excited, or is this as cool as I think?

Its hard to tell from that pin.  Can you check the spore size/shape and post some pictures as it matures?

I don't have a way to do the microscopy, but I will do my best to take some shots of the specimens as they mature.  I am also starting a cardboard culture (is that the right term) from a couple stem butts I gathered.
Hopefully they will reach full maturity.

We've had really fall like weather in Oregon recently. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Yep, thats my assumption for the time being.
Everyone keeps complaining about the weather,  but I'm appreciating it.  :-)

Anything lead you to that conclusion other than cyans being out of season?

They certainly look like the typical Seattle P. cyanescens I photograph in the fall.

You should take spore prints and send them to a someone with a microscope.

I have one, Alan has one, Workman has one, Mr. Mushrooms has one (I think).....

Definitely could be, but I prefer to play the odds.  Not every bluing mushroom in the PNW is a cyan, especially not in June.

I would like to see the pics of the full grown ones, that would probably clear it up.
