Pine and Fir shavings cheap
    #12699381 - 06/06/10 07:57 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Hello all,

I see that some edibles like pine and fir shavings, but wonder
what other species can be cultivated on this substrate.

I can get it fairly cheap.  Forest Wood Shavings 12 cubic feet for $10.

Thanks!

Most edibles hate pine, and barely tolerate most fir species.  Douglas fir chips run about $100 per ton, so $10 for less than 1/2 cubic yard is pretty steep.  I'm assuming they sell it for horse stables?

Right.  Ah well.  Still looking for good cheap materials.

I did see cracked corn for 50 lbs @ about $10 at this same feed store.

I hear that it works well with grain jars.  (I have been very lucky with rye
berries so far, but want to try other materials)

Thank you again for taking the time.

BTW: Is there a "brands" list, like Cervantes strain list?

There is nothing like having your brand confirmed to know that
you have the right stuff. (i.e. when I confirmed "Eco Earth" for Coir with a fellow poster)

Too bad.

Rye berries have been very doable, but I am hoping to beat
$40 before shipping from an online seller (Bob's Red Mill).

...and where does one fine millet in large and cheap amounts.

It looks like finding good suppliers is going to be the hard
part here.  I am looking up the other feed stores near where
I live and plan to visit a few.

Thank you Doc, for the heads-up.

Chris

I'll bet azurestandard.com has a drop point near you.  It's $20.10 per fifty pound bag.

If you get clean pine chips or hemlock chips for free you could try...

Ganoderma tsugae
Pheonix oyster

or you could incorporate it into a mix and find something that likes to grow in it. P. Weilii.

It seems you would have free access to horse manure and bedding through the store.  Why not grow crimini and portabellas?

I would expect to have to put some significant effort into finding a culture of the above listed that would do suitably well on an evergreen.

Ganoderma tsugae is hell bent on hemlocks so I'm not sure it would do well on a pine or other evergreens.

Thank you both for taking the time.

RR, that URL was perfect!  I intend to set up a drop point.

Thanks!

P.S. They carry millet too.  I read elsewhere that millet
might be produce better yields than rye berries, but I have
yet to confirm this.

Organic rye berries are the gold standard for mushroom spawn making.

Well, if I were the only person surveyed then I would probably
report that 2/3 people prefer rye berries.

(I got two bags of rye and one of millet ;0)

I got my drop-point settled and have an order in...thanks, A-GAIN.

...and I promise to no post "Millet is better", even if it does better
for me, unless gather specific, controlled, data....just to be careful.

"barely tolerate most fir species"

Does it include douglas fir ?
