Disapointing pinset.
    #12689260 - 06/05/10 12:52 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

I grew on aluminum bulk trays.  The substrate seems to be drying out and pulling away from the trays.  A lot of the mushrooms seem to be growing out of the sides of the bulk substrate instead of on the top.  I don't think there is anything I can do now but I was wondering if I use a monotub and line it with a black trash bag will i still get this side pinning with the monotub.  My pinsets are not that great I want to fix this before I do the monotubs....  I'm hoping that this side pinning is causing the poor pinset.  I have seen multi spore monotubs have amazing pinsets.....I fan and mist regularly.

Try wax paper next time. Search it, lots of info and examples.

That's not from drying out.  As the mycelium consumes the substrate as food, the substrate naturally gets smaller.  You should line the aluminum tray with black plastic before filling, so that as the substrate shrinks, the plastic remains attached to it, preventing the gap.  It will also prevent the mycelium from digesting the aluminum, destroying it.

That aside, if the only place you're seeing pinning is in the gap around the edges, your humidity is too low.

Roger Rabbit... holy shit dude, you have a lot of posts! And good advice. My first inclination is humidity/temp issues, but he mentioned that he fans and mists everyday. Then again, low humidity prevents pinning on the surface, and pinning continues where the bit of humidity does pool... in the cracks

Batalbj1... any way you can post a few pics?
