Rice Bran Horse Feed for PF Blocks
    #12657236 - 05/30/10 06:20 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I purchased a 40lb bag of granular (not pellets), Natural Glo Stabilized Rice Bran today. Is this an adequate substitute for BRF?

Here's a pic of the nutritional analysis label.
The ingredients are stabilized rice bran, and calcium carbonate. What does the calcium carbonate do to the mixture? Will gypsum still be necessary? Vermiculite?

What sort of substrate mix ratio would be good utilizing this horse feed?

That looks just like what I get, only a different brand.  There's not much calcium in it, but when making brf cakes, I've still be skipping the gypsum and all works fine.

Use it just like brown rice flour in the 1-1-2 basic ratio if you're making cakes. It's more nutritious than rice flour because brans still have the outer husk.  I also use it as a sawdust supplement for oysters and shiitake.  It's good stuff, and cheaper than brown rice to boot.

Yeh its as good if not better that brf, use exactly like brf, 2:1:1 verm:bran:water for cakes.

Horses are given lime stone feed, its just a calcium source. Add gypsum if you wish.

Great! I did not know you could use this in a PF mixture to fruit oysters.

Oysters will grow off a regular PF mix yes, and yes, they'll grow off a PF mix using bran instead of flour, but what he's saying is he uses it as a nutrient supplement in sawdust based substrates to grow oysters. This is a common practice, he's just pointing out another use for it.

Why is that funny? Just like with humans there's the rich, the bourgeoisie, the poor, and the untouchables.
