it should have a pressure gauge , just turn the stove on like high or meduium and let it heat up then then your pc will start bulding pressure then you can try to adjust the heat but i just adjust the pressure by letting some of it out when it gets past 15psi by pushing down on the little push down thingy with a knife . does your friend have a rack for it? to keep the jars off the bottom . if not then use a towel at the bottom make sure its all cotton. i think the same amount of time is used for pints too cause it does such a great job at sterilizing.

well of course steam has to escape or it would blow up so fast. is there anyway to add a gauge? if so then i would greatly reccoment investing in one, i have no idea how your suppose to estimate the pressure , all i can think of is turn your stove on medium and release some pressure every 5 minutes and hope for the best.

Pressure cookers without a gauge are by far the more common ones.

Go here and read, read, read:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=de&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=how+do++use+a+pressure+cooker&lr=

Use 1 inch of water and a rack. Pressure cook PF jars for 45 minutes.
