Having extremely bad luck need some suggestions
    #1259781 - 01/29/03 04:56 PM (21 years, 1 month ago)

I must be doing something wrong or I just have shit luck. I Inoculated 10 pint jars on December 4th and they are still only like 60-80% done. I keep them in a rubber maid with a fish tank heater at 70-80 degrees. Is it supposed to take this long? Some of the jars are pink buffalo some are golden teacher some are treasure coast. I also cased a myco bag on Jan 22nd and I checked today no mycelium has poked through yet. What could I be doing wrong I started this project months ago with myco bags that failed got new ones and now only 1 out of the 4 new ones has reached 100% colonized the others failed again. Anyone have any advice is my myco bag casing screwed if nothing happend in 8 days?

How deep was your casing layer?

Could be that you need to keep your temperatures around 84f while incubataing..Or could be they stalled from lack of gas exchange.. What are the jars? BRF/Verm.? Do you have foil or tape over the holes?

Obviously it shouldnt take almost 2 months for some pint jars to colonize. Keep your temps at 86 is the only thing you can do right now. But i would be thinking about using a 10 cc syringe to squirt some sterile water into the top of the cake using the oven tek to keep sterile conditions, cause it sounds like you didnt mix the ingredients right and they probably dont have enough water and or brf if that is what you used. So just squirt some water in the damn things. Men.........lol

The casing layer was about 2 inches the substrate layer was about 3 or 4 it was a entire myco bag. I did it in a tupperware bowl and put a sealed lid on it and placed it in the incubator. I was told air exchange is not important during colonization. Did I do something wrong could I have made the casing layer too wet or do I need more air exchange? If I need more air exchange would just poking holes in the lid work I dont have any polyfil to make a filter.

Well some of the jard actually have a few water drops in them I went the easy way and bought pre-made jars from spore haven. Most have in foil over the lid I did a few with tape though. Im going to try and up the temp to mid 80s hopefully my heater can do it. Atm its like 78 in there

I would wait and see what happens after you get the temps up. I wouldn't poke holes in it. If the temperature change dosen't work them maybe replace the tight sealing lid with foil. But I would suspect it is your temperature.

thanks for the info going to let casing stay as is and raise temps. How long should I wait before switching to a foil lid though?

What are you using for casing layers?

The reason that you have not seen mycelium breaking through the casing layer is it is too deep. Casing layers should be 1/4" for every inch of substraite. It is going to take a long time to get through 2".

verm, peat moss, and crushed oyster shell. I just checked it out raised the temp a little and smelled the casing when I first made the casing it smelled like mushrooms. Kinda smells odd now but I dunno hopefully it works and hopefully the jars do something =\

How much longer do you think it will take then robert? The tek said about 3 days and my substrate layer was very thick thats why I did about a 2 inch case layer. I sure hope your right hehe

A proper casing layer at 86F will be ready in 3-5 days normally. I'd guess that you are getting close at 8 days, however lower temps can slow times down alot. Say a prayer to the mushroom gods for quick colonization and protection from the mean green.

Also if you do ever get those cakes fully colonized you may want to dunk them...seeing how they have been the incubator for so long. Im sure they have lost alot of moisture.
