Bargain at nursery (please ID - lophs & maybe tricho)
    #12554023 - 05/13/10 08:00 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

I just came back from a local nursery with these cuties and some rooting stock. I got the whole shebang for a very reasonable price.

I suppose the two buttony beauties can't be L.Williamsii - that would be to good to be true. However they do look like lophos. Jourdaniana maybe? They both have flower stubs - one pinkish, the other whitish.

And how about the columnar one? A cross-section is visible where it was cut. Is this a tricho, a cereus, a myrtillocactus?

Update: the pink lady's flowering on her second day at home!! :-)

Update: one day later, the flower's still unfolding

Looks more like L. koehresii and L. diffusa perhaps.

The possible Trich looks more like an Echinocereus IMO

Echinocereus viereckii ssp morricalii possibly.

I added a pic to the original post.

Ah, I see, thanks Dan. Probably 2 diffusas (Köhresii?) with slightly differently colored flowers.

I have a doubt about the other cactus though: don't Echinos all have round cross sections? This one's star shaped.

The one with the white flowers definitely looks like L. diffusa.

The pink flowers could be almost anything, but the wavy tubercles make me think L. koehresii.

On the Echinocereus, no they are not all round cross-sections, did you do a search on the species I put?

A diffusa and a koehresii does seem most likely.
Nice find!

I did, yes, but I only looked at pics/descriptions on the Wikipedia page, that's why I had the wrong idea about round sections.

Looking at the pic here,
http://windowsillcactus.com/wc_echinocereus_viereckii_ssp_morricalii.shtml
it looks as if it could be it, although the color is different.

It's great to have knowledgeable and helpful folks around

The color is different, but that is all camera, growing condition, and lighting based IME.

The growing habits and structure (i.e. clumping, height, ribs, spines, etc) all seem to fit that species fairly well.

Very nice finds indeed.

Diffusa are interesting but tend to be a bit more picky with water IME, plus I enjoy more colorful flowers.

Which is why I love L. fricii and L. jourdaniana

I read that diffusa, while not containing any mesc, is quite active. However, if I were SWIM I'd be very reluctant to kill these babies for my own consumption!

... especially now that one of them has greeted me by FLOWERING just the day after I brought her home!! (original post edited, flowering photo added)

Great! So I will label them Diffusa (the whitish babe) and Fricii.
