My first Homemade Sushi Roll!
    #12539945 - 05/10/10 09:08 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I finally did it!  I made the rice, rolled myself a sushi roll, tempura battered and deep fried it!  The rice wasn't too hard to make, I found the right type of rice, salmon, jalepano, and cream cheese!

Mmmm

I make sushi all the time but I can never cut them cleanly.  I guess I need a sharper knife or a better cutting board.  Either way I don't really have any room left for either.

That looks awesome.

I am still yet to try making sushi.

Someday soon.

Pants, For that there is 2 ways to go:
1.Sharpest knife in the world - Like, one that will cleanly fall through a tomato by it's own weight.  This will generally require an excellent quality knife that you sharpen for every use.
2. Serrated knife.  Like a very fine saw, you can rip through the seaweed without having to apply a bunch of pressure.

Well, sure you need a sharp as fuck knife, but there is also a technique
how to cut a roll.
Here's how I do it.
Always have a bowl of water to dip the tip (like the quarter of the blade) of your
knife.
When your roll is ready, go ahead and dip the tip of your knife.
Turn it upwards, so a LITTLE water runs down on the blade, just enough to
help "lubricate" it.
Then cut your roll in half on the middle.
Turn the two pieces paralel right next to each other.
Dip again in water and make three or four nice clean cuts.
Voila!

Interesting.  I would never have thought of that.

interesting, i will try that next time.  i also need to get a sharper knife though.  it's been a while since I've made sushi but I plan on doing a lot of fishing this summer so I want to make some more with what I catch.  They extended the salmon season out here until september so I'll be fishing for king salmon in about a month. if i'm lucky this time around hopefully i'll be making some nice sake or philly style rolls.  i'd like to figure out how to make a salmon skin hand roll as well since those are probably my favorite type of temaki.

I work as a server at a sushi bar. The knifes the sushi chefs use cost around 500-600 bucks and are made the traditional japanese steel way. they are sharp as fuck and stay that way for a while.
