Species sections.....
    #12500350 - 05/03/10 05:18 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

I was curious what the easiest way to find out which section a mushroom belongs to is? I see people writing about "stuntzii section" and "cyanescens section" often.

How do you determine what section a mushrooms belongs in?

I apologize if this question is a bit stupid, but I did try searching first....

Guzman's monograph has a key to the sections.

I was able to get it via interlibrary loan, also it is available in .jpg format.

I don't know of any easy way.  For any genus, you will have to refer to one or more monographs written, where the sections are usually described.  Though, there is some times more than one mycologist focusing on the genus, and they often have separate approaches, and names for sectioning the species, so it is good to check out the monograph or papers written by both mycologists and decide which divisions to subscribe to, or decide both explanations are both BS and need to be overhauled once again.

For Psilocybe, Workman has some of the species he has done microscopy for divided into Sections (according to Guzman, I believe) on his website.

Of course, that is not really the proper way to go about it....  You should really read the literature (Guzman's monograph) for definitive descriptions.

I found this thread searching my name, which I tend to do on occasion.

For lists of species by section, check my journal.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/postlist.php/Journal/437

And then look for the threads that start with "Section".  Each one has a PDF paper with fairly current sorting of the species by section as best as I can tell, mostly based on Guzman.  Many have the features used to separate the sections defined at the beginning of the paper.  This are living papers and get periodically updated as new information becomes available.

The sporeworksgallery is buggy and keeps dropping sections.  Currently the section Cyanescens and Cubensae are gone, but I'll replace them once the gallery software is fixed or replaced.

I often start by dividing  mushrooms into 2 sections, but then find that they need even further dissection.

So I keep chewing.
