Frozen Spores?
    #1246200 - 01/24/03 01:31 PM (21 years, 1 month ago)

It is really cold here, about -5C and my spores should be here by monday, however the way our mail is deilvered I am afraid that the mailman will be leaving them by my doorstep which is outside and will freeze my spore syringes, do they survive freezing temps?, should i just let them thaw out at room temp?

i thought having frozen spores would decrease their effectiveness [in cultivating] ?

I have used spores that ended up freezing in my mail box.  After the syringe thawed and I innoculated, I noticed no difference in growth.  Spores are pretty resilient to cold but not to heat.

Someone should do a test, cuz I've never seen this answered accuritly. I mean freeze a syring and see how it works...

... damn, The little guy got good prices, maybe I'll give it a go...

Agreed. I would like to see the results of some simple research on this. If for no other reason then to get an absolute concrete answer to this.

I have nothing to back this up with but spore syringes may not be affected exactally like spore prints. The reason I say this is the spores in a syringe are hydrated unlike the ones from a print.

In any case some research would be nice. Unfortuantly I am not in a position to do such a test currently. Maybe if nobody eles gets around to it I'll do it in a few months.

Nobody

It's been done.
Frozen syringe...then un-thawed and it colonized the substrate just fine.

yeah didn't ryche do this to like 6 syringes? IIRC there were no problems after like 6 months of being frozen (weeks?). I KNOW from personal experience that freezing doesn't hurt them. can you think of any other mold/fungus spore that dies from freezing? thought so... if the frozen spore thing isn't in the faq by now then it should be, it gets asked about too much for a simple yes/no question.

My experience is similar to those already posted, frozen from the mail seems to do OK after thawed,  Frozen from extended time in the freezer not so much.

There are enough spores in a syringe for them to survive without a notable difference. If you inncoulated with just one viable spore, you wouldn't notice a difference...
Repeatedly freezing and thawing would make a difference, with each freezing event rupturing several thousand spores.
