Help identifying possible psilocybe mushroom in Georgia
    #12419436 - 04/19/10 09:29 AM (14 years, 1 day ago)

Habitat:
I found these in a vacant weedy lot in Atlanta, GA, Fulton County in April.  Temps are very mild this time of year with highs in the mid 70s F, lows can be in the 50s.  They were growing on sandy soil amongst some weeds.

Gills:
Very dark Brown, attached.  Young mushrooms have a veil but does not leave a ring on the stipe when it breaks.  (see pics)

Stem:
Short for the size of the cap, 3-4 inches max, thin for the fully grown mushies, woody compared to p. cubensis and hollow.  Color is a creamy yellow and turns brown like the caps when picked.  Stipe is bare (no ring).  Spores are very visible at the top of the stem where they are dropped.

Cap:
1-2 inches diameter, color is a nice caramel brown for young mushies and darker almost chestnut brown for older ones, texture is tougher than the familiar p. cubensis, shape of the cap is convex.  Some of the older mushies have little cracks around the outside of the cap.

Spore print color:
Very dark purple/brown, almost black.

Bruising:
None that I can tell.

Other information:
They have a very farinaceous smell, stronger than p. cubensis (I'd have a tough time getting these down for sure if they are edible).  I originally thought they were p. weilii, then p. atlantis but the more pics I find online, I am starting to think they are p. galindoi.  Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Not a Psilocybe at all and I am wondering what makes you think that they are.
I am sorry that I can't tell you what they are for now. Maybe someone from your neck of the woods has a better idea.

They look like Lacrymaria velutina.

That's what they are. I knew I've seen them, but I couldn't remember the name.

I guess I won't be eating these, but I think they are something else.  Lacrymaria velutina are quite a bit larger than these guys from what I've found.  Max is 2 inches in diameter for the caps I've got.

I don't have much experience, but they look like the Lacrymaria Velutina I found last week(see my post HERE)

As you'll read in the thread I mentioned above this mushroom has gone through a few name changes.

Here is an old thread I found to be helpful, it refers to the mushroom as "Psathyrella velutina". It has some good information on this very common mushroom: Weilii imposter: Psathyrella velutina, a pictorial guide.

Thanks for the response, these definitely look like the Psathyrella velutina species you mentioned (the p. weilii impostors).  Sure glad I didn't eat them

Funny. That's the same species it has been identified as before. Psathyrella velutina is the old name. Their name is Lacrymaria velutina now.

See here: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/lacrymaria_velutina.html
