Shroomies Explained?

Could someone explain the shroomie rating system to me? I understand how to rate a user/thread but do not understand what effect it really has. The reason I ask is because once I received ~6-7 rates I had 2 shroomies. Once I hit 10 rates I only had 1... explain.

User can rate you from 1-5
The total rates are summed up, devided by the total rates, and rounded to the nearest integer.

The rating system is overkill, people only ever use 1 or 5, never 2,3, or 4! Also its annoying that you can no longer change a rating. The default is 1 shroom, and if you click accidently you can't change it back.
