Casing a cake with Cobweb
    #1234737 - 01/20/03 04:35 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

I opened one of many healthy jars I had stored away and this one had a tiny tiny trace of cobweb when opened growing on a tiny part of the top layer of vermic. I only used the bottom half of the cake to some manure with a few other healthy cakes. Is this alright or will this come back to my casing even though I didnt use anything near where the cobweb was. Thanks

this would be best asked in the contam forum but a good rule of thumb is to get rid of any contamination you find. remeber we are dealing in microcosms and if it is visible then there is more there that is not visible. also, many contams carry spores which spread rather easily. I would definitely recommend not casing that 1. if you think it stands a chance then fruit it in it's own terrarium (2 liter bottle) so as to keep the contam from spreading.

How sure are you it was cobweb?
Many people mistake mycelium growing into the vermiculite layer for cobweb.

If it was cobweb, then dump it ASAP.

I once used a spent cake that had a spot of cobweb to spawn some straw/dung. Want to guess what I grew? A shitload of cobweb!
