rye question
    #1233177 - 01/20/03 06:10 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

My experiments with rye are not going too well. The grain colonizes very slowly and of the two jars that I shook at about 20% colonization, growth halted altogether.

Does this sound as though the grain is STILL too dry? There are no signs of contamination.

My birdseed also colonizes slowly but at least it eventually finishes.

Quote:

how moist is the inside of the jar?

No visible moisture on the inside jar surface, kernels look fairly dry.
Quote:

do you see broken kernels?

Just the two or three that popped during the simmering.
Quote:

do you see any goo?

Nope
Quote:

what do the jars smell like?

Almost odorless. There's a faint grain smell through the filter. In the stalled jars that I finally tossed there was no smell. I grew several batches of bacteria during previous attemps so I don't think that's the issue.

All I can come up with is that they are too dry. Getting this moisture content right is a bitch!

I agree (I think it has a lot to do with your source of rye) that is why I switched to millet, just soak, drain, pc, viola!

I experienced the opposite. Alien's substrate has taken 4 tmes longer then grain (rye or birdseed) to colonize, again, IME.

Water content is key, it seems, with any substrate.
