Syringes in microwaves
    #1231246 - 01/19/03 12:23 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

Hi ahs anybody ever put a syringe into the microwave?

I was just thinking how much easier it would be to sterilize them if you just fill it with water and then nuke it.

it'll work as long as you take off the metal tip. no metal in the microwave.

ive tried it ...look its not a good idea.to get h2o at a sterile temp you need to heet up the syringe too hot it will bend or melt.and for metal. when i did it i used a .2 cc needle for an agar tray and needle tip and all nuthin happened/...
only certian metal is bad

Microwaves work by seperating water molucules, it wouldnt be a good idea to put something 80+% water in there.

dont beleive me? take a cup of water, put it in a microwave, take it out, then break the surface with a spoon or something... youll have a fun time having a burnt face.

that's heating water to just below its flash point, adding a spoon adds just that little extra bit of energy needed to push it to that, causing it to errupt in what seems like a boiling mess all in your face.

That's not really separating anything.

Thanks.

lol
Sure you could melt it in the micro wave you could in the pan.
Both ways can affect the plunger seal if over done but then so can
just age.Best thing about boiling would be you can leave the needle attached
as thats also a wearing part.

I didnt mention more about the baby bottle thing
its basicaly the same idear and best to do in a bowl of water
in the micro wave not just the syringe on its own.

But your call wouldnt wont you to get a contam and blame me im to new lol

Hahahahhaha yeah why dont I.  I was also thinking that it would be safer to put the syringe in a bowl of water.  That might help but I am not sure and I dont want to wreck my microwave.

It works fine..... I sterilize all my syringes in the microwave. Fill completely and the nuke on high for a minute at a time . They`ll hiss water out the end and literally boil inside. I do this twice. Also put a coffee cup full of water in there and let it get to boiling...then after you`ve done the syringes twice draw up sterile hot water from the coffee cup and put the cap on the needle.. I let the cap sit in rubbing alcohol while I`m waiting. Works excellent. much daster than trying to PC and I`ve done 20 syringes from prints and never made a bad one yet. Try it... you`ll like it. never even seen one spark or electrical arc at all by the way.

it works fine.

what will happen is eventually the water in the syringe will boil and then rush out of the tip into the cup. The water will boil around the syringe, and that's about it.
you take it out after a few minutes, suck up the water in the cup, let it cool, attach your needle.
