Bulk substrate smells like poo

A friend has some bins with a 50/50 mix of scotts 3-1 and sun dried cow manure. the cow manure just smelled like dirt and the scotts, of course, smelled like dirt. He pastuerizes for 2 hours at 160-170F and innoculates with a jar of grain. One of the bins is now smelling like cow shit. Is this bacterial contam? If so what can he do? Is his bulk substrate too wet?

May be to wet, I think cow shit smells like dirt  :smirk:

If the smell gets overpowering, then you probably have bacteria. I had a lot of problems with this type of bulk until I started drilling drain holes into the bottom of the bins. The holes are more for gasses to drain than water. You also want to make sure you let the manure dry enough before you use it.

My friend and I are new to pasteurizing. Do you have to take care not to contaminate the newly pasteurized material? He has some laundry bag that he submerges in water in a larger pan. After about 2 hours, he lets the bag hang over his sink and waits till most of the water has dried out. Should he take care no to touch the material with his hands or is this and similar measures not a concern with pastuerization.

as long as your hands are clean, it should be no prob. 
to check moisture get a spoon or knife to hold the substrate away from the side and tilt the tray . you should not see standing water in the bottom .
holes in the bottom of the tray are a good idea . :laugh:

I squeez mine out and let it cool in the sink untill i can squeez the hell out of it with my hands thru the pillow case I also press it with a small plate.
You can also toss it in a rosting pan and pasturies it in the oven at 170 for 3-4hours
When it's done the top will have a crust about 1 inch thick scoop it off and toss it back for another run. the dung and straw below is a nice wet but not to wet mix.
I have not had one problem with water content sence I started this. + it seems to really cut down on contams.
