Huntington's Bonsai Show + Cacti

I went to a Bonsai show today. I didn't upload them all, just the ones I liked the most. I figured something out too... They were taking the bonsai into another room to take photos--I figured out they made the tables green with the canvas backing to keep people from getting good photographs That's my theory, anyway :shrugs2: The picture room just had a black background.
Anyway, the photos don't do these trees justice. Sorry they're not better organized ;P
This is one of my favorites. I got a photo of the bark/trunk up close if anyone is interested I will post it.
I like this one a lot too... Not sure how it qualifies as a bonsai, can someone explain that to me? I am not sure what the plant is either, but I am interested in growing it myself Cute, huh??
This one is another favorite. I love the coloring on it.
And... "Best for Last" I don't think these are better, but I wouldn't be surprised if my fellow cacti addicts do. I should have taken photos of all the IDs but I didn't, hence the odd photo names. They were pretty crowded, it was hard to get photos of some...
Blah blah blah... On to our spikey -and not so spikey- friends
Just to show size....
I should note, the penny was 2-3" in front of the loph (bigger than the photo shows).
I really like this cactus--I believe it's a copiapoa.
Is this related to a muiria?
I took this shot just for Cactusdan because I know how much he loves the little guys...
Hope you liked the photos

Nice post and pics!
All of them are awesome. I would nominate some for pic of the month but I think you've already got that wrapped up. Those blue Conophytum calculus are in the same family as Muiria hortenseae, which is Aizoaceae. So they are related. Not sure what those miniature bulb looking things with the pink flowers are.

Awesome bonsai pics The forest one is pretty cool. Why do some of the trunks look so bleached? Have they been white washed or something?

I think it's lignified wood, or maybe dead wood on which other plants are sowed ?

They are
...And yet almost every loph I've seen being sold in the US has had its orgins in Cali
For the sake of collection and hobby there is not a terrible risk.
Awesome picture piam!
Love the U. pectinifera <3
And yes, that one is a Copiaopoa.
Copiapoa tenuissima f. monstrose.
I have one I'll be doing some grafts of soon hopefully.

My eye is getting better at IDing some of these things! I don't so much like the conophytum--they look more like banshee eggs. Muiria looks more like dragon eggs to me. Thanks for the ID

Nothing was for sale (as far as I know)... It was an art gallery/museum type show There were a few I wished were for sale though! If it was for sale, how much do you suppose that loph *would* sell for?
Not sure how they lighten the wood... I think I will take a Bonsai class or maybe get a book. I'll upload a few more photos of the bark later today too.
Thanks for the ID on the little orchid bonsai I really want to try growing that!
And, thanks for the copiapoa ID Dan
If anyone has a chance to visit this place, I highly recommend it. The cactus greenhouse is only open for viewing on Saturdays. http://www.huntington.org/ I am going to assume that's okay since they don't sell anything
