Any luck growing lactusa virosa (wild lettuce) ? Good TEKs?
    #12267248 - 03/25/10 12:33 AM (14 years, 26 days ago)

So my Lactusa Virosa (Wild Lettuce) seeds seem to be germing at a good rate, and like many weeds, each with its own time schedule.

I placed them on top of potting soil in a small pot in the sun, with a saran wrap cover with a few holes in it. Very moist soil, probably too moist..

So far, the first two or three to sprout turned brown and died off (too much water?... too much sun?) while they were still tiny green specks.

I've moved them inside to my windowsill.

Any tips to improve my luck with the other ones still beginning to germ? Who has had success and what's your TEK?

If you cover them in plastic don't put them out in full sun as it'll have a greenhouse effect and scorch your seedlings.  Keep it moist but not wet as per the way you'd germinate most seeds.  I've never grown wild lettuce before but it seems so weedy I don't think you'll need much luck

I just planted some in a hanging planter outside my window. They took a good 3-4 weeks to sprout but they dont seem to be very needy.

I've planted lots of leafy greens outdoors and found that its ok to have them out in the partial sun with no green house as long as you water them plenty during the night. They wont sorch if you water them at night.

So does this mean no direct sunlight, or only direct sunlight for a couple hours a day?

For an invasive weed, I'm having difficulty with this

Thanks guys, I'll let you know what goes down. Anyone else feel free to chime in.

To grow mine I just cleared a spot on the ground, scratched the soil, mixed in some seeds in early spring, patted it down, and kept it moist. They grew 10' tall in their second year and the wind spread their lettuce love for miles. They grow everywhere now

Thanks

Sounds easy, but my yard is so full of weeds already, everything I do outside gets full of various weeds.

I'd like to start them in a pot until they are bit established and more identifiable from all the other weeds. Thoughts?

Double post:

Should I give Calea zatechichi similar treatment? I have the seeds but haven't tried yet.

Wild lettuces always come up on the shady side of my house, between trees and hedges, behind a trellis, etc.

These places are treaded upon infrequently. The soil is lighter and more airy.

They're almost never watered but manage to stay moist.

Thanks! I'm almost sure its because the potting soil I used became pot of dense, solid, dry mud. Would mixing sand into the soil first help make it more airy? Or what would?

wild lettuce wont germ in wet soil, seeds will rot, it wont grow in high humidity greenhouse type setup. They will not flower in pots, they stay in vegetative state, they need to planted in dirt for them to flower. Plant them in small pots outside in full-partial sun, once established transplant to full-partial sun area to flower. Once the stalk appears then collect resin for smoking.

Thanks, I'll try perlite and your advice Addiction229

Luckily I saved some seeds instead of using them all in one shot.
