Decisions, decisions

I'm planning to hack down some of my bridgesii. I really don't want to as I'd like to keep it going, it's already at about 4 foot and has a very healthy and beautiful 12 inch pup at the base.
I would like to know when the best time to hack it down would be, before I transplant and water or after?(I'm planning a trip for 3 people) Also I'd like to know where to hack it down, should I cut below the pup's growth or above it? I'd like to promote faster growth in the pup as it will be the most beautiful bridgesii anyone has ever seen before for sure.
Also is there an easy mode for hacking down a big cactus? Last time I had to do it it felt like I needed a chainsaw.

Yeah I'm just gonna pull a Katana out of my ass.
Seriously though good idea but those things are expensive! And I don't really have any samurai friends so...

lol, Im just kidding, although I always have wanted to harvest my cacti like that.
I use a wood saw on the thicker base section, the tips(top couple feet) should be soft enough to cut with a serrated bread knife.
I would cut below the tip of the new growth, as to focus energy on the pup. Plus you'll get new pups.
And cut before you transplant, that way it'll be a lot less cumbersome to handle.
I love cacti so much
I just now started rooting a few Torch cuttings My collection is getting too big (who am I kidding, there's no such thing as "too much cacti")

I also seem to have a problem with a couple of my loph grafts, they are getting encrusted and splitting for some reason.
Also here's another shitty pic of my bridgesii

Check for spider mites, thrips, etc.
If none, have you sprayed pesticides on or anywhere around them recently?
Also, what is your watering regiment and what is the stock?

Stock is pereskoipsis they have been indoors under flouros for about 3 months getting regular every day water from the sink, which I'm thinking may have something to do with it.

It may just be the everyday waterings.
The scabbing/encrusting is probably do to the cells being pulled too far apart from all the extra water, since the skin/tissues is weak it eventually rips causing the splits.

Not every day as in I water them every day, I meant 'every day' as in regular chlorinated shitty city water.
It was all I had at the time.

I've always watered with city water, with no problem yet.
How often did you water them and did you check for buggies?

no bugs that I noticed, I rarely watered them, they were only under fluros for the winter.

How odd.
Keep an eye out for spider mites, tiny red dots.
That's the only thing I can figure as my grafts and indeed all plants have taken tap water their whole lives.
I hope to start gathering and watering with rain water this summer though.

A family member of mine works in a lab and takes home their distilled water for me and the cacti seedlings
ps - I think I burned the aforementioned seedlings. Most of them are white now.. They were in the sun with a saran wrap cover (with holes) and I think it got too extreme in there

yeah, if they're white they're fucked. I just experienced the joys of having seedlings fried by the sun.

Really? What a coincidence, that's where I keep my Katana too! When people try to mess with me, I'm all like, *gruntBAM!* And if they know what's good for them, they run away screaming! ^_^

Nah, you should never use a sheath. This way you build a nice, strong rectum.

Okay! I'm done!

Get your heaviest meat knife at the kitchen (ala Psychosis), and cut the wanted ammount above the pup with a single fast and firm movement, remember, the lower, the stronger you need to hit it for a perfect cut, also be sure to make it on a 45 degrees angle so water won't accumulate on the callous and promote rot.
