COIR IS A LAMbo

h-poo is a Ultimate Aero

petsmart or petco got coir normally 1 brick $5. they got online special 3 for 7 or so but by the time you do shipping its like 10 or so

my advice is local hydro store get the untreated kind for $1.75 a piece
ill be moving back to poo now that winters over. got a hookup on all the poo I need free

Coir/Verm/Gypsum is very easy to handle, extremely contam resistant and can give you nice results.

A nice substrate for Cubes.

I know how you feel. I always like to have a couple different projects going to keep my mind occupied.

My current main project is working with giant pf cakes.  I tried a small batch of 2 quart size cakes and they're doing great, so I started a 2nd batch at about 6 quarts per cake and seeing how that goes.  I'm concerned they may have been too big to properly sterilize all the way to the center though.

Coir and hpoo are not only thing to use, but they are considered to be best performers (hpoo) and contam resistant (coir). You can use straw, corn cob, or any mix of those. People have even used cardboard or newspapers, but with questionable results. I have heard about a substrate mix that has potential to be a very good performer, that person mixed coir, gypsum, wormcastings with coffee-water soaked straw and shredded corn cob. It colonized very quickly and witout contamination, but I think that grow is not finished yet, so I can't say how well it fruits.

For a good coir/verm tek check out Damion 5050's Coir tek. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11916595

It is easy and comprehensive I may or may not be using this tek right now.

i thought coco coir was used as a casing layer
because its not nutritious
so wouldent you have to add coffee or gypsum to it no matter what
if so then cant i just use verm with coffee and gypsum instead

I believe originally that was the idea behind it.  Later people realized it is in fact nutritious and makes a great substrate.

Try out this substrate if you want;

7 parts organic steer manure (aged in the sun)
2 parts worm castings (with added Kelp and Volcanic rock)
1 part perlite
1 part vermiculite
1 part spent coffee grounds
1 part gypsum
¼ part bee pollen
3 tblspns bloodmeal
3 tblspns bonemeal

You could forgo the bee pollen if you want.  I hear it's bad for the hives and not good for bees.  I'm not gonna use it anymore.  Plus,  it's expensive.

Then use coir. Can't get more simple than that. And if it wasn't good, it wouldn't be used by so many people.

It's nutritionally fortified much more than straight manure.  It'll provide for sustained,  strong healthy mushrooms.  Lots of 'em.

But if you're just put off 'cause of the season,  then I agree with the coir based suggestions.  It is nutritious.

There is no need to case bulk substrates. It doesn't hurt of course, but cubes don't really benefit from casing layer.
If you want to use one, do 50/50 peat/verm + lime and oystershells.

Yeah, they are, but folks still like to put them in their casing layers. I can't say really, I never use casings.
